With all the increase in gun sales, what would be considered a sufficient caliber of handgun for home security? Does a 32 cal. pistol have enough stopping power to be of any protection? Serious question....Thanks.

Might be enough for a typical Karen, but not at all sufficient for a Bubba.

I get why someone would want to shoot a Karen, but a Bubba? C'mon man!

Outdoor board but, IMO, Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 with slugs would be best HD gun, followed by a 9mm full sized pistol. Both outfitted with a light system of some sort.

It wouldn't be my first choice. Grab a 9mm and call it a day.

I’d suggest you request the administrators move this thread to the outdoor board where you’ll get all the suggestions/answers you need, plus, from knowledgeable people that know firearms.

.40 caliber with hollow points for home defense is another option

the best caliber is the one you're most comfortable and accurate with. that being said.... .32 is probably not going to be that. my wife has a tiny keltec .32 and it suuuucks to shoot so you're not gonna practice. and therefore you won't be proficient with it. a heavier 9mm or a .22 (Ruger sr22 is a good choice) will be more fun (and cheaper) to shoot.

but if you're new to guns... which I am assuming you are... I would not recommend a pistol for home defense. they're much harder to shoot than the movies make them appear.. and I'd never reach for a pistol first in a high stress situation. but you do you.

For home security, get a 12 gauge shotgun. You'd be stunned at how difficult it is to hit a target with a pistol under stress.

If you're dead set on a pistol, 9mm is the way to go for me. 9mm ammo has really advanced in recent years. You get something like Federal HST 124gr +p ammo and it packs quite the punch while still maintaining fast target acquisition times.

9 for a handgun if compact, #4 buckshot if 12ga 3/4 (or check out the mini shells), 223 for rifle.

Actually don't use a rifle. You may shoot up your neighbors house.

If you are looking for a gun for home protection only get a shotgun. Intruders hate to face those the most and you won't have over penetration.

If you are doing concealed carry then I suggest the 9mm S&W M&P shield. Very easy to carry and holds 8 rounds

I keep a 3" Taurus Judge by my bedside for home defense. Not expensive, in the $400-$500 range. Fires a .45 Long Colt, .45 Schofield or a 3".410 shotgun shell (what I keep it loaded with).

In my car, I usually carry a Springfield Armory 1911 .45.

Those two pistols will drop a rabid gorilla.

Your best bet for home defense is to leave a child alone in your house to build an elaborate set of traps for any potential robbers.

Is the 32 the only firearm you have access to? It is better than a fist in most cases. A 32 is better than nothing.

No...just that rifles just aren't that easy to keep hidden from kids, grandkids, etc.
