12 GA. Mossberg pump. 18 in barrel pistol grip. Never use buckshot in the house. Blast thru too many walls. # 4 shot is all you need. Won't cost much either.

Also, bear in mind what kind of ammunition you'll be able to get. Things are loosening up a little bit, and most kinds are getting a little bit easier to find, but consult with your local dealer on what's a best fit for your needs. You don't want to purchase something only to find that you can't find anything to put thru it.

That's what a gun safe is for.

IMO, the first weapon anyone should buy is a shotgun. It's just such a versatile thing to have.

Shot placement is the more important detail.

A .22 to the brain or heart will drastically slow down any individual.

But I would recommend a 9mm for personal protection.

(Or a 12 ga with buckshot )

Yeah.

Shotguns (or variants like a Judge or S&W Governor) are great for home defense, simply because you're virtually guaranteed not to miss what you're aiming at.

You don't need a handgun

If you are very proficient a .32 might be ok. I would go with a minimum of a 9MM in a handgun but if I was buying a gun solely for home defense I would go with a short barrel shotgun and 00 shot. superior stopping power, lower chance of going through multiple walls and you only have to be close not precise with your aim.

it's better than nothing, but not really. .38/.380 with hollow points is about as low as you should go.

You'd be surprised how tight the pattern on #4 buckshot is at 20ft.

In the drawer by my bedside is the .32 but leaning up between the bed and nightstand is my AR with 40 rounds in it. I feel that in addition to the .32 I have all my bases covered. In my shop there is a loaded .22 pistol in my toolbox and a 12 gauge pump with plug removed loaded with #4 lead shot in case the need arises while I am out in the shop.

While true it's still not as tight as a 9MM

9mm and up for handguns. Today's 9mm guns are smaller and hold more ammo than 32's of years past

I use a tactical shotgun with 00 buck shot. Buy wife knows to get in the closet and if anyone opens the door shoot. We have a safe word for anyone else opening the door
