Gun Cleaning Gurus

I have just inherited a few guns and they have a camo tape on them. Over both the stocks, scopes and barrels. I am trying to remove it but it is stuck like Chuck. I heated some with a hair dryer but that isn't really helping either. Does anyone know any secrets or something to spray on it without ruining them? I do not know what kind of tape it is except it has been on the guns for at least 15 years.

wd40 or some type of adhesive cleaner.

Maybe goof off? I use it to remove adhesive on all kinds of things. Not sure if that will damage the finish on the barrel though.

Goo Gone is tamer than Goof Off. I would try it first then move up to Good Off.

I think Goo-Gone works better than Goof-Off.

Acetone for the metal only.

Lighter fluid is pretty good at removing the remains left behind from tape. I can’t see it hurting anything.

I wouldn't put WD 40 near a firearm.

You can get goof off with citrus oils and its tamer than the original stuff. I've used kroil on metal parts before.

I hear this a lot and don't get it. There are certainly better products out there, but WD40 is better than nothing. It's all I ever used up until just a few years ago...just like my father and his father before him.

In most cases, you’re probably fine. But you HAVE to remove all excess WD40 or it could cause problems. There are many better options today. The “this is the way we’ve always done it” line bugs the shite out of me.

Out of curiosity, why?
When I buy a used gun, I hose it down in wd40, flean it with a tooth brush and paper towels, then give it a light spray down with dupont Teflon or a wipe down with motul spray grease... Depending on app.
The dupont Will destroy wood, so that has to be kept in mind. But it works wonders in ARs and AKs

Do you think the Goof off will mess up the finish on the stock?
Posted on 6/18/19 at 10:06 am to beHop
Its not going to hurt a firearm when you are just taking tape off. I don't think its bad for cleaning the whole thing either. I have heard not to use on bikes though.

^^^^ I was going to post basically this. Orange oil based wood furniture polish on the wood parts.
