I watched one today go up the vertical side of a house today.
The siding was what I think is called ship-lap, but it was very smooth wood. I don't know how the snake found a way to get a grip and carry himself up, but he did it.
Are there many snake species that can do that?

Creepy freaking animal.
makes my skin crawl to watch one climb.
Yesterday I saw one on the porch behind my wife lol
I didnt say a word and it slowly crawled back behind the outside fridge.
Our little secret.

They are amazing.
I once saw one go up an oak tree as easily as he crawled on the ground.
As long as they stay out of my chicken house I don’t bother them.

We have quite a few grey rat snakes frequent our property. I have seen them climb straight up a 10' brick column onto our deck. I also just found a 5' one today inside our screened porch on ground level. I was going into the screened porch to blow it out. I saw the snake on the floor, and propped the door open, and casually walked right past the rat snake a couple of feet away and then used my power blower to gently blow it in the direction of the door. It worked perfectly. Once I got the snake outside, I just watched it crawl off. I want them around our property.
They come and go. I'll see them for a couple of weeks in spring through fall periodically. They are usually gone for a month or two and then back for a couple of weeks. I guess they eat everything (mice, moles, chipmunks, etc.) and leave and then return after their prey repopulates on our property.

If any snake smells birds, rodents, squirrels in an attic, they will climb the walls to get to the nest

This one got past the aluminum flashing. I will be adding cones for next breeding season.

White oaks are awesome. My favorite snake other than speckled kings.
