Wanting to bring family crabbing July 31. Are the crabs running?

I don't think crabs ever stop running during the warm months. I've never had to pick a good day for crabbing. Every day is a good day if the weather is good. Have fun.

we were just there Friday-Sunday. Crabbing on the beach sucks bad right now because commercial crabbers have completely covered the rocks with their traps. Only caught a dozen in 3 hours. May need to try the bay side.

i think this question gets ask more than anything.
Its a safe general bet they every year crabs in Grand isle run on the beach in August. Like clockwork.
However especially if you doing it with kids, this is the same time those little stingrays come in to the beach also. Never had issues with that until last year when 2 people in our group got popped within 30 minutes of being there. Very painful for kids as it just keeps burning. Wear some shoes. It may or may not help but both were stung on the foot.

I got a report yesterday from the in-laws. Were hammering the crabs on the beach running a single line.

only thing that will cure a stingray sting is soak foot in as hot of water you can stand till the pain goes away. Hot water draws out most of the poison and breaks down the venom.

Tried turkey necks and chicken necks.

Talked to the in-laws again today. So they caught 4 dozen yesterday. It slowed down and they only caught a dozen today. It was NOT a line which surprised me as that’s what they usually use. Was between 3 traps. Sorry for the wrong info.

You can always catch them at Arties

I've been there in the past and filled a 100 quart ice chest in under 3 hours. They will be coming to beach on this next full moon to lay.

purge them with fresh water at least 3 times to get all that beach sand out of them. they suck in the sand to get that scummy film off of it to eat so if you dont purge them well they are very gritty to eat

We were there july15-18 right after barry with 4 traps on the beach and smoked them. No sponges either, but i know that is coming soon like every year around this time. Used turkey necks and their wasn't any other traps around. We were right past castaways bar as far as location is concerned. Use rebar poles to keep ya traps from moving with the tide. They were fat and mostly females like usual. The males are usually in the bay right now. Hope this helps.

Damn. Never seen them do that before. Usually its just residential crabbers out there. U are talking about the rocks right past the sureway im assuming right?

This, but you will still get the grit sand in them. More so if there has been some storms in the gulf crashing the beach. Big reason I only crab the bay side.

I have a dream, where one day, someone won’t post something referring to Arties in a grand isle crab thread.
