Currently have a 2 1/2 year old female golden. Family dog with no hunting. Looking to get another dog and the place we bought the first one from (puppiesinlouisiana.com) has goldens for 1500 and labs for 650. Why is there such a price difference ? We have 3 small kids, living in New Orleans with a decent backyard.
For the price difference why shouldn't we get a lab for the next dog?

Never had a golden but would not want to deal with the hair.

If you are not getting a hunting dog, why pay so much? Adopt one from the shelter.

We have been looking at shelters as well, but, not finding what we want. Most of the dogs we are coming across are mixed with pit or rot, not intrested in that.
And we are very happy with the golden we got from that place already.
More wondering what the difference is between the golden to lab to make that big of a price difference .

$1500 for a golden? Goddamn, is this dog trained to cook you meals or clean the house?

I bought my Golden from a dude in Gonzales. $550.
Look in the paper and on the interwebs. DO you need a champion bloodline? If so, pay up.
For hunting, I would def go Lab. For large lap dog who thinks he is a small puppy when it comes to cuddling, I would go Golden.

I have one of each...both great dogs. Retrieve, track deer, whatever. I would never pay that much for either though. You can get a good registered dog out the paper and have a gem if you know how to handle them.

Like I said earlier, I'm not going hunting with the dog. This is strictly another family dog.
Sid, you have a link or number to the place you bought your golden from in Gonzalzes for $550?
Not breeding the dog, just want a good family dog.

We have a choc. lab and a golden. They are both great but the hair from the golden sucks.

The only reason people pay that much for dogs is for hunting and other tasks.
For your needs though, I would not pay that much for either dog.

I have a small-bred yellow lab.
3/4 american, 1/4 British.
She points upland birds (pheasant, etc), retrieved ducks, finds sheds and tracks deer.
All this and she gently wrestles my 9-year old boy. I couldn't ask for a better dog.
My vote is for lab. But she needs to have a job in our house.
Other good choices are blue lacy and vizsla.
$1500 is wayyyyy too much for a dog. Unless it's a show dog.
Good luck!

It depends. As a pet, way too much. As a hunter, $2500 for a pup from the right bloodlines is not uncommon.

our golden (RIP Rusty) came from hunnington in Covington, I'm sure he was every bit of 1500, likely more. he was the best dog I've ever owned or ever known. I've no idea why they are so much more than labs
he'll be the last dog I pay for though. we have three rescues now

Labs are more destructive and if you have kids toys and clothes lying around you will be spending more than $650

15 years ago I bought a Golden Retreiver in Houma for $400. We recently bought a chocolate lab for $300 in Houma.
I would NEVER pay $1500 for a dog. That's ridiculous.

Do you duck hunt? You get what you pay for in hunting dogs. Price of dog and professional training will run $4000 to &5000. My last lab hunted 12 years before I retired him. Money well spent to me. To each his own. My current female is 3. I work her about every day. Great past-time. I do not regret one cent. I personally would not spend $250 on a pet

Shelters now make adopting a dog such a headache. I wanted to get a puppy last weekend. Place wanted to inspect the house, check the mortgage to make sure I owned and not rented, wanted to do a three year wellness check on my dogs with my vet. The no kill shelter failed me because of a cat door on my gate the puppy could get through. Also there is a two year lapse in medical records for heartworms and the parish shelter balked at that, because I buy them online not at the vet anymore. Needless to say I was turned down at both of the shelters for that and the dog I was going to save probably got thrown in an incinerator out back. Shelters have a place, but I think they are getting a little overbearing.
So we decided to just get a pedigree and pick the dog the kids want.

Wow, you would think they would make it easy.

I've had both Goldens and Labs for years and currently have 2 Goldens and 1 Lab. They all compete on the hunt test level and each one is an exceptional lap dog. Lots of things to consider in pricing these dogs. They can be anywhere from $500 to a few thousand a puppy. if you know what you are looking at the value is likely justifiable. For a pure lap Golden without an extensive show/competition background I wouldn't pay more than $1000. I should have a litter coming in this summer around $750 a puppy.

All shelters aren't like that. 2 rescues from 2 different shelters and basically just had us fill out an app and meet us.
