The hammer is the only "safety" I have on my HK and I think it's the absolute best one available (in the DAO guns - it's cocked and ready, but the hammer is down - and you can hold it down). Thumb on the hammer and NOTHING can can happen. The ergonomics of placing a thumb there during the holstering process is perfect. Unlike other safeties, which may be left on or fail to disengage, your thumb will never betray you when you go to actually fire. You have to move it to aim.

It was the overriding factor for my gun decision.
