Glock 17 or Glock 19

Which of these is a better option for wife to have in her bedside drawer? It would be for home defense purposes only and she would not be CC.

Either would be fine. What kinda hands does ur ol lady have? Like a Petite southern belle or russian house maid? If the latter - a full sized gun would work well for her.

Grip is the same size in girth for either. The 17 is just longer because the magazine holds a couple more rounds.
If she is never going to carry it, I vote for the 17. Longer barrel, little heavier, more rounds in the mag.

I think the G17 is the easiest to control (for follow-up shots) of any of the mid to full size Glocks.

I have both and if I was never going to CC and only carry and shoot one it would be the 17.
FWIW my wife would rather target practice with the 17 vs the 19 as well

If she prefers the 19 she could always run 17 mags in the 19.

Are you completely set on Glock for her? It's a great platform and obviously proven but I've taught females that found the grip to be rather chunky if their hands were small enough. In general, the grip width for most double stack Glocks will be the same.

Honestly, most grips that are tapered make it easy for women to shoot. I've seen this numerous times in my classes. The most well-liked guns that women shoot in my classes are my M&P full size, and my girlfriend's VP9. Guns like a Glock 19/17, FN FNS9, FNX45, Springfield XD, or any gun without a grip taper will feel 2x4ish. The "grip taper" I'm referring to is that the width of the grip increases as you get father from the slide. So it will be slimmer closer to the slide than at the magwell. Here's what I mean (notice the VP9 is slimmer at the top and the Glock has the same width throughout the grip):

I also noted in a recent thread that in my experience women seem to universally prefer the grip on the M&P's over double stack Glocks.

Get a Ruger Security 9 for half the price. Spend the rest on a few hundred rounds of ammo, 2 spare mags, and range time. Glocks are good guns, with an almost unmatched following in the secondary market in terms of accessories and options. But there are a lot of pistols that are just as reliable for a cheaper price tag. The Security 9 feels better in the hand, has an outstanding trigger, forward slide serations, and can often be found for less than $325.

It's a good thing you're doing for your wife, but if you don't involve her in the decision making, it probably ain't gonna work.
