GI surf fishing advice

Heading down to GI tomorrow to a friend’s camp for a long weekend. Our other friend with the boat can’t make it.
I haven’t surf fished in 25 years. Any advice on baits to use and do you think we will even catch any specs in the surf?

They are still catching down there. Hit Elmer’s island. Live croakers are great if you can get them but you should be able to catch plenty with marker 54 shrimp under a popping cork.

Limbo slice matrix shad on 3/8 oz hot pink or chartreuse jig head bounced off bottom. It may be a little early for that color so bring some shrimp creole colors too, just in case. Good luck and report back.

Get some small (1/8) screw lock jig heads. Death grips will work if you can’t find them.

Just a heads up. Academy doesn’t carry marker 54. All the local stores will have them though.

My buddy fishes the beach a lot, catches a good but and rarely gets his knees wet. Stand in ankle deep water abd cast between the first sand bar and the beach, if that doesn't work, stand on the 1st sand bar and cast between the 1st and 2nd sand bar. If you near the rocks cast to the corners of the rocks.
He catches them on 3" smoke sparkle beetles.

I like to walk through the first trough to the first sandbar. Walk parallel to the beach. Make fan casts in 3 directions while you walk. Sometimes they are in the first trough(hole) back towards the beach, sometimes they are on the first sandbar straight in front of you, and sometimes they are in the second trough out into the gulf.
Look for irregularities along the beach line sometimes you can feel them with your feet while you walk. It doesn’t take much but the trout will stack up on these spots which make drains so to speak.

Honestly you can use almost anything
Ive caught fish on beetle spins, mirrorlures, matrix shad, spoons, cocahoes, shrimp (live and dead), under a cork, Carolina rigged, free line pogies etc.
Best bet for success is trying a few different baits and a few different styles, and one will absolutely hammer trouts and reds... and stick with that till the bite falls off... then try something else... but be prepared to switch when it slows down... and know nothing but crab are biting mid day down there
I usually fish from sunrise to 11 max... then again from 5 till dark... less sunlight, and less heat, the better
Again, the best bait is the one you have confidence in working, and know how to work properly in a given situation
