I am far more concerned with voltage drop for that distance, what size cable is there now?

I would get a few prices for running the new service feed from the utility company.

This here. At least SEE what it will cost.

Don't know the wire size. It used to run three camps but the original line was run in the 50s

I just calculated voltage drop and something isn't right. Is there a transformer mounted somewhere close to your house?

If the transformers are the white cans with the conductors coming off of them then yes. There are multiple transformers running down the line.

Aaaahhh, first thing I would do (in your shoes) is hire either an engineer or a very competent electrician to line it out for you. Without knowing all the details my advice along with everyone else's here is worth exactly what you are paying for it.

I would think a 30KW would burn at least 18 gallons every 12 hours.

Gotta be cheaper to fix the line than a sunk cost into a generator plus fuel

I know after gustave, mawmaw was upset she couldn't clean, cook, wash clothes and the house be cool during the power outage so powpow went and got a bigger generator. 2600+/- sq foot, 2 ac units, electric cook top, so on and so forth. She lives her normal life of 20 kw. Maybe he has a super generator or something. From the horse's mouth....or thumbs.

What kind of school did you go to?

Anyway, try to see about repairing the line or something.

Makes more sense to take the drop near the camps, it's just odd that they are metering at on spot so far away and not at the individual camps. I suspect that was part of some agreement the original camp owners had or it was all one family. I'm also surprised the utility company is not responsible for the line, unless you just want to pay to replace it and they aren't willing to do it. I've seen situations where the utility company was willing to do the work and bill you for it at whatever their going rate was.

What about some solar panels to run a few of those items to take less draw from the generator?

If you're smart about how you bring things on and off line you can get away with not much kW at all. Put a soft start on the air conditioner and you can really get the overall kW down.

30kW is PLENTY to run a regular house.

solar panels is a good idea. I also plan on calling entergy about the line. the rumor was that I was responsible for everything behind the meter but definitely worth a call.

thanks for all the help baws

I have a 22kw standby generator on my house, will run everything except the electric heat on both ac's (4ton & 2.5 ton) at same time. So 30kw should do fine. Especially if u use delays on large items such as central AC.

On the other hand going to strictly generator power would be my ultimate last resort. Will always need maintenance, have to haul in fuel, etc. I would look a lot harder at getting prices to fix existing power before going down that route.

See if you can find a used light plant somewhere. I think those are around 15kW which is plenty for most things. You'd have to be smart with the power management but you should be able to run everything on that. Diesels are most efficient around 90% load so you'll want to try and size for that.

I've never personally heard of anyone running a generator full time for all electric needs, I'm guessing there's a reason for that. I'm sure they're out there though.

You would also have to change the oil every third or fourth trip out. A lot of diesel generators recommend changing the oil every 200-300 hours.

Run the new line, the type wire that is run over head for that application is pretty cheap, you will be much happier

Boats/rigs are pretty much the only place you ever hear of it. It's a really horrible way to make electricity.

That said, we had one at my friends houseboat and it wasn't bad at all. You can go a whole lot of the day without electricity on most days.
