Was dove hunting once. Driving down a levee and drove right over the top of a BIG moccasin. Parked, got my gun out walked back and smoked him. The game warden who unbeknownst to me was watching this whole thing play out checked my license but did not say a word about the snake. This was in Arkansas.

Long time ago I had a beagle get bit by a snake. This ole man told me to put the dog in a pen with another dog and it will lick the venom out of the dog. Also put some honey on it to make sure the other dog would lick it.
Anyone else ever heard of any old time remedies like that.

Our neighborhood has a huge water holding tank up the road. A few years ago, the pump on that tank broke down and the water department sent their maintenance man down to fix it. Lo and behold, there was a 5 foot timber rattler curled up by the pump. Maintenance man killed it and fixed the pump. However, he brought the rattler down to the truck and posted pics of it. Green Jeans saw the pics and fined him.

If any of yall are into The Meateater Podcast, on Episode 293 Ryan Callahan tells the story about when his dog Snort got popped on the ear by a rattler and they were like 5 hours from the nearest vet. He was legit considering cutting off the dogs ear but stopped just short because he didnt want the dog to potentially bleed to death instead of die by a snakebite. Crazy story.

My chocolate lab got bit in the neck by a moccasin while at dog school.
Not a pleasant experience, but she survived.
Also ate a pack of batteries and an entire pack of baby wipes that week.
My backyard looked like someone laid 25 feet of PVC.

B.S.
It doesn't fight the poison directly but what it does do is prevent inflammation and swelling caused by the poison, which can lead to complications and death.

My dog that got bit and almost died saw 2 different vet schools, uf and auburn's post bite. We had back to back to back hurricanes run through my area, so I dipped out to auburn for 2.5 weeks that year. I saw 4 different instructors and a litany of students, because the damage was so bad it became show and tell. When discussing preventative treatments for the necrosis and other issues stemming from his bite, and what my doctors did vs what they would have done, not a one advocated for benadryl to have been added. There just isn't much histamine wise for it to do its antihistamine thing on. If it's "working" it's because it was a fairly dry bite.
The swelling comes from cell leakage, from the venom, not histamines. My dog was leaking iv fluid so bad he got pulled off iv fluid and swapped over to hetastarch. The fluids were escaping and doing what they call 3rd spacing, which is pooling fluid outside the cells.

Correct, venom causes coagulopathy which can lead to significant internal bleeding and can affect organ function. Fluid shifts and infection are all possible. A lot of dogs get warning bites that can be dry. It’s the dogs that try to kill snakes that get it bad. Only initial test worth doing is Coag panel to see if clotting times are prolonged. If so, needs antivenin.

My wife's a vet, I just asked her what hemastarch is and got an answer along the lines of "it's expensive and it's what you give as a last ditch effort and the dog usually dies". Not a direct quote, that would take 45 minutes to type, but that's the paraphrase.

He did survive the experience, and I think around 3k, back in 05. 2 vials of antivenin, he was around 70-75 pounds. I should add my mom was the head of the nursing department for the local ER and I had known my vet clinic owner since I was 7-8 years old. Obviously she also knew my mom. I was getting meds/supplies at cost, and had multiple people competing
oddly enough, the emergency vet was the lowest price on antivenin, at $540 a vial. It would've been more 3.5-4k range had I not been able to supply at "bargain" rates. He lived another 11, almost 12 years. Since your wife may be curious as to what permanent damage would look like, left side behind the eye was the main strike area. I get he has breed of peace related brindling that obscures it some, but even the left ear sank in a good bit, and sat janky af. He frequently got Tommy Lee Jones references, as Two Face, because the damage was so bilaterally split down the middle. Pic was probably at 11/12 years old, 8-9 years post bite.
