If you were buying a late model truck rn which would you choose a v8 gas truck or a diesel? I understand the current fuel prices, but looking at overall longevity and reliability. Which would you buy, a Titan/ram/gm/Ford diesel, or Titan/ram/tundra v8?

Diesel is $4.00+ per gallon

Can’t make that make sense in a 1/2 ton.

100% gas burner. At this rate with cost of fuel and expensive repairs I wouldn't own a diesel truck unless needed almost daily. And I currently run an F250 diesel.

I see absolutely no reason to go diesel any more.....

These gas truck engines are going 300K miles with little issues....Ford, Chevy, Dodge, they all good!

Diesel engine adds 5K to the price and double the fuel bill....it is a no brainer, IMO.

Makes little sense these days. I am still a bit advocate for small diesels in small trucks, but the pricing on them is ridiculous. I dont think you can get them in the lower trims.

The Hemi/8 speed trans has been the best powertrain in a half ton truck for some time now, and I say that as a Chevy owner.

I have new gmc diesel and love it. Gets 25 mpg. I drive a lot and planning to keep it for 300,000 miles. Traded a f150 with v8 at 250,000 miles. I feel like a big upgrade

It’s my life’s mission to make people quit thinking a diesel in a half ton is a good idea

I have owned all 3....the best was the V8 Dodge Hemi, but the mileage was poor...
My EcoBoost V6 Turbo has been great, average mileage.
ANd you can't beat the Chevy 350 V8, period.

So, take your pick. Also, I have no problem with a diesel either....trucks are just good these days.

EPA killed the diesel for anyone not towing daily and screwed it up pretty good for those guys to.

Get gas.

Pick the V8 you like, they are all pretty solid TBH.

Its an excellent idea if properly executed. Every offering so far has been total shite. They cost too much, are too much displacement, and offer little fuel savings over gasser.

It can be done right but the market doesn't want it. The market demands that diesels be the powerful "premium" option rather than the efficient one

I have heard nothing but good things on the Hemi.

EcoBoost has been mixed bag with anyone doing more than light towing not very often having issues.

I agree the 5.7 is a great motor, you can no longer get it however in a new vehicle. The 5.3 from a reliability standpoint is probably even better if it doesn't have the AFM bs in it, which you haven't been able to get for going on two decades.

You want a reliable gasser get the Yota 5.7, Nissan 5.6, Ford 5.0.

For the OP, I have heard nothing but good things about the GM 3.0 diesel but still fairly new and frick GM.

I full believe that in the near future, anyone wanting a actually reliable 1/2ton with realistic working performance will be reduced to having to build out good body condition trucks. Drop in crate motors and aftermarket transmissions.

I just towed towed a loaded 5’x8’ enclosed trailer 440 miles @ 75 mph and got 15 mpg with a GMC 3.0 diesel. I usually average 22-23 mpg on the highway @ same speed. 2022 AT4.

I liked my GMC 6.2 gasser, but I averaged 13.5 mpg overall in it. I expect I wouldn’t have gotten better than 9 mpg on the same trip, if that.

Gas would cost $120 using 2.60 per gallon

Diesel cost is $120 using $4.10 per gallon

I know. It was about even with the gasser. Just providing some real world experience. I ordered the diesel when gas was 2/3 of diesel and it made more sense. I posted about it back then.

But I really like this diesel engine. I always wanted a diesel and needed a new(er) truck. So I pulled the trigger.

My fuel prices may be off a little but they are pretty close I think.
