Recs on the Gamo Swarm series? Live in a subdivision, but looking at something my son and i can do in the backyard.. target shooting, and possibly small game, armadillos, etc.

This is a link to their Fusion Gen 2 LINK. Their appears to be a Magnum as well which is more powerful.

Thanks in advance!

It isnt safe to shoot a pellet rifle unless your yard backs up to woods. You have to treat these like a .22 rifle, they are no joke

For backyard work a PCP is going to be an order of magnitude quieter and you can tune them down to be back yard safe. You can buy Chinese hand pump for about $60 on Ebay and pick up a quality regulated PCP in the $230-300 range and have a much quieter and much more accurate and versatile platform.

Google the Umarex Gauntlet for starters.

I have a Gamo Varmint rifle I bought on Amazon for $90 that I use to shoot squirrels in the backyard. It’s a little loud but my suburban home is surrounded by woods. Just have to use common sense when shooting. I use heavy pellets so they don’t crack the speed of sound. Overall it sounds about as loud as a nail gun.

Check Midway when you are ready to buy. I keep getting emails from them advertising air rifles (Crosman). I bought a Crosman Varminator for $70.00 a couple of weeks ago. But I would think they are running specials on the Gamos as well.

I also got a deal on a Benjamin Summit that was like 1/3rd of the advertised price. It doesn't shoot all that great but I just don't think I have broken it in all the way yet.

Have an older version of Gamo air rifle...that thing will put a pellet thru a picket board on privacy fence
It's good for neighbor hoods but must be respected and handled for its capabilities

Buncha people thinking their privacy fence is a backstop.

I know of a guy who was killed from being shot in the chest with a crack barrel .177 pellet gun. Get an airsoft rifle and eye protection if you want something that's neighborhood and kid friendly. Still somewhat dangerous but you arent going to kill anyone with it. They realistic enough to give good meaningful practice.

Great rifle but not hand pump friendly at all. To hit those 4300psi pressures require at least another $300 for a pump. My Benjamin fortitude was $220 hand pumps in about 3-4 minutes and I get 70+ regulated shots off the tank at 800fps with 7.9gr 177 pellets.

The Avenger is based on the ATI Nova Liberty (Name by the same company) which has some great features that were removed on the Avenger (Larger Titanium air plenum and a high/low power selector switch) and loses some others. Last I checked you can call up ATI and they will sell you a warranty returned rifle for $100 you just have to fix it yourself.

Boy was I wrong! Having completed the Air Venturi Avenger Power Tune, I had low expectations for an Avenger Hand Pump Tune. That is a tune based on a fill pressure of just 3,000 PSI, about the maximum that most of us can manage using a HPA hand pump.

Given that this Avenger Hand Pump Tune uses a fill pressure that’s waaaaay down from the 4,350 PSI maximum fill pressure, my expectation was for few consistent shots, and rather anemic ones, at that. Wrong, wrong, wrong…

In fact, we have a tune that gives no less than 90 consistent shots. Using 14.66 Grain H&N Field Target Trophy pellets again, these gave an average Muzzle Velocity of 801.84 FPS. That’s a very respectable 20.93 Ft/Lbs of Muzzle Energy with an Extreme Spread of 28.50 FPS across the 90 shots.

quote:

Having amazed myself with the results of this tune, I decided to test the gun at exactly the same settings but with a fill pressure of just 2,000 PSI. That’s well under half the maximum fill pressure, of course.

As you can see below, the result was still 48 consistent shots. (Average Muzzle Velocity 796.6 FPS, 20.66 Ft/Lbs). Amazing!

I definitely agree you can't just shoot it anywhere, especially if you have small lot lines. If you have a decent sized yard and a good large backstop like a shed you should be fine. Definitely dangerous to put some aluminum cans on a pine fence and blast them, you are certainly right about that.

I have a piece of 3/4 in plywood at a 45 degree angle I shoot into. I have a small section of woods and then a privacy fence behind that, but my yard is also just under an half acre.

I also don't shoot if I see or hear anyone back there.

If you're looking to shoot just around the house and in the backyard, you really may be better off shooting a .22 with the powderless bullets. I've found they're more lethal for shooting squirrels, rats, rabbits, etc. around the yard than the Gamo pellets. I think the Gamo pellets often pass through too fast. The powderless .22 bullets also don't travel as far and are quieter.

Powderless .22 ammo? That’s a new one on me, I want to look into that. Up until 2 years ago, my Dad, who was 92 at the time, was whacking squirrels with his Gamo. My son and I had it sighted in, good supply of the pellets it shot best, and he killed (no lie) hundreds of squirrels in his SBR backyard. One of his great grandkids knocked it down one day and messed up the scope and we never could dial it in again. When it was on, it was deadly.

My son has a Gamo Bug Cat in .22 cal believe. Its pretty loud has a good but of pop too, I rolled a possum with it about 10 yards away. You want to stay below 1100 FPS so the pellet doesn't crack. Accuracy is pretty good, I can put some playing cards on a board and hit the numbers or whatever.

I have that exact gun. Old school Benjamin air rifle. It’s safe for the backyard if you have a backstop. Does not pass through a wood fence.
