Thats what I was thinking.
I want one because it fits me well out of the box. The humpback creates an immediately perfect sightline for my giraffe neck.
I would think that I would be indifferent to the operating system (gas vs. inertia) while in the field.

Same with me. I can't tell the difference. I just prefer the slimness of the SBEII and I hate how the gas operation sounds. It rings in my right ear.

You could just buy a Super Vinci and get the newer technology, since you know the A-5 is a SBE knock off...

I had the same choice and chose the Franchi. Love it. No issues at all. It is very light.

The old A5s felt like they were blowing up as you shot them.

I've put 1,000s of rounds through my BPS over the years and it is still rock solid. Of course, Pow Pow Cove probably put 10,000 through his old humpback and it looks & functions like it's brand new too.

Say you lined up an A400 for +$1500, an A5 for $1200/1300 and an A300 for $700. (The 3 guns that interest me at the moment).
Would you lose much by purchasing the A300 and saving $800?
Im asking because I have not messed with any of the newer guns.
The time is getting near to purchase an upgrade, and although the price of the A300 is extremely nice, I dont want to miss out on anything if I can spare the extra money.

Just tried to buy the outlander at Cabelas and was flagged. Maybe that's a sign I should get the Franchi. When I held them side by side the Beretta felt more balanced to me. The Franchi, while light, felt very unbalanced with all of the weight towards the barrel with nothing in the stock.

My hunting buddy got rid of his beretta and got the new a5. His shooting prowess, what little he had, has taken a upswing this year. I loved my old A5 my father left me but when steel came along it never spit out the shells like lead. So I tried my luck with a pump. Never have shot one, and now I want shoot anything else.

Sure.
I opted for the SX3 for less than $1,000. Satisfied.

I've always shot a pump, so I'll never understand the recoil issues.
I made the switch 6 or 7 years ago. Took me about a year to stop trying to pump the shotgun every time I shot. I still think I could shoot faster with the pump. (that sounds bad)

I have 391s and love them but to address Pops question I would go w/ the one that fit me best and felt right. I had a chance to shoot an A400 a couple of weeks back just messing around and I couldn’t miss w/ it. For whatever reason it fit me better than my 391s – theres not much diff between the guns. It’s the only time I have been tempted to trade way a 391. The $800 A300 would be a 3” gun but I am fine w/ that. If you cant kill them w 3” HS steel you need to go to the range and figure out how to shoot or maybe golf is for you.
One small problem about inertia guns I heard is that if you submerge the stock the spring that is in there doesn’t work well when its full of water and the gun wont cycle but this would be a minor problem. Probably a bigger issue would be how the gun got submerged ;)
Seriously I don’t think there has ever been a better selection of quality autoloaders, find one you like that fits and swings well in your price point and away you go.

No, not $800 worth. Put it to you like this, Id rather have two A300's than one A400

Just sold my A300. I didn't like it. Too many cycle issues. Gun smith said nothing was wrong with it, but it sure did jam a lot.
My buddy bought the A300 and had to ship it back to Beretta within two weeks. He had to borrow a shotgun for our trip up north.
