For those of you that have at them, what type of plate carrier and plates do you have?

Also, would you buy something different? Esp since the boating accident?

There seems to be a lot of commercialized plates and types and before I get into some research, I am looking for recommendations.

This event at EA this past week has me thinking how I would need to protect myself as I would try to protect my family in a shooting situation.

Mods, please delete if not allowed.

This has been a big topic of conversation everywhere on the gun boards since Shot Show.

A lot of controversy lately.

You can’t defend your family if you take rounds to the chest

Hard steel plates that fit into a vest. Bullet proof vests are much heavier and don’t have the versatility or range of motion that plate carrier vests have. The plates are positioned to protect vital organs

Friday there was a report of a person on campus with a gun. Lockdown activated, SWAT teams called in., roads blocked, etc.

Just out the blue I get a text from my kid "I love you" then they texted me the school was on lockdown.

The thought of having a Uvalde situation or other active shooter and realizing that all my ammo is worthless if you take hits.

It is strange that I know guys with tens of thousands of rounds of ammo, dozens of guns, but no vital protection.

I don't want to go LARPing, just something for self protection. Depending on the cost, maybe one for all my family members.

Check these out, a little on the spendy side however.

Agilite carriers made in Isreal. A friend has a couple sets and loves them. I'll be purchasing one here soon.

I've never really thought of it until I got an late carrier for crossfit. It's 5.11 tactec trainer. Actually meant for weighted plates, but I keep toying with getting some actual plates just in case SHTF. I've seen people test the level IIIA (handgun) stuff you can get for cheap on Amazon and it works. Level III+ is where it seems to get pricey. Everything I've seen rated well is more than I'd like to spend at this time.

Terrible advice. Steel plates are heavy AF, cause rounds to fragment which means shrapnel to your face generally, and if you were to get tagged with a a steel plate, it's going to knock the wind out of you at minimum.

Ceramic or bust. And before anyone states "steel let's you be shot more than once" if you are getting shot more than once in the chest it's probably a lost cause already.

The only time you’ll ever wear plates or that vest is if SHTF. Then it’s worth its weight in gold.

Essential component of the “bug out” kit iyam.

Your wife and kids don’t need them as much as you would. You’re the tip of the spear so to speak.

Tacticon makes good stuff. Relatively cheap if you buy their deals.

Think about it this way. If you have an AR, bad guys with 9mm shouldn’t get close enough to you. You need something that can stop government issued rounds

I know a guy, he’s got the shellback carrier/level IV ceramic getup. Although he hasn’t tested it out yet, he’s got it loaded up with 5.56 & .45 mags and a medic kit and he’s confident it will serve its purpose if the event present itself.

If you’re buying all of this you should also consider a mag carrier of some sort. You don’t want to lug around 6 mags in a grocery bag. All-in-one would be nice.

Need a free hand if possible

…training in it.

All the gear in the world is nearly worthless unless you train in it. And your first line of defense is your physical fitness.

As someone said above: if you’re buying plates, avoid steel and buy ceramic. Mr. Gunsngear has some reviews of ceramic plates that Botach sells. I bought a carrier and those plates. They are heavier than some, but, again, training, use of cover, physical fitness, and ability to move and operate without heaving for air should be your first priority.

There have been plenty of bad guys taken out by well-trained guys without body armor over the centuries. Will body armor mitigate risk? Yes. Is it a silver bullet to kill a bad guy? Nope.
