Which applies even if you're wearing a plate carrier. You'll still be alive but you'll be in a world of pain.

Most of the plate carriers have the ability to attach mag holders, first aid kits, etc.

My plan is to rig it with these, so I'm not looking for a concealed carrier or vest. But if I have to use grocery bags, I'll make sure they're double bagged, lol

I have single strap bags with mags in them for now.

That's true but the controversy has been more about the weight, freedom of movement, getting uparmored in time for the fight (there is no time during a forced B&E) plus ... anyone who's ever been a shooter or in a firefight knows to take girdle shots when facing a body armored opponent.

Listen, I have carriers and plates, some given to me and a couple I bought plus one I wore for years. I get it. But they do take a minute to get into and, even the latest greatest best ones are going to add (on avg) ten pounds ... that's not counting the rest of your kit like extra mags.

I don't move as fast as I used-to even without the added weight. So I, as well as many others, take a different approach to home defense these days. I'm talking about forced entry B&E CQB in the middle of the night.

Post SHTF teotwawki is another story but then you're talking sand bags and fighting positions.

Fwiw I like the new lightweight composite plates. They're form molded, very thin ... and most of them come with side plate options if you choose the right carrier.

I know this guy I served with that made this dragon skin-esque kilt to afford some level of protection to his hips and balls. It's pretty cool. I wouldn't ever wanna have to find out if it makes a girdle shot from a rifle survivable or not.

yeah all of this (if I were to buy plates) would be to get my family from my house, to my camp in the woods as fast as possible.

All completely hypothetical....in the event of a break-in at my house, I'm reaching for my revolver and blasting 357 mag rounds down the hall while wearing my boxers

I wouldn't be reaching for my plate carrier for a B&E. I got one during the Alton sterling shitshow. My thoughts that when stuff like that or BLM riots go down I want to be able to get back to my family and home. Having a carrier with ammo and medkit would be just as useful as having a rifle.

Riots, loss of law and order, and civil war are more of a threat than an invasion on our soil iyam.

Hell, if we lost the power grid to an emp or something, it would take no more than a few days for society to collapse with no water or electricity. Bug out

I can agree. I'm just at a point where I have some money to spend on other things first. First is the rifle. I have a stripped lower that I've been meaning to build up for years. Need to finally spend the money and do that. Then I'm planning to take some defensive shooting classes (handgun and rifle) along with a stop the bleed class. Then once I'm done with that, I'll feel like the next step is spending ~$500 on level IV plates.

Or you can YouTube guys who make their own plates with fiberglass welding curtains, resin, and ceramic tile . It's actually impressive how well some of them work.

Terrible advice. Steel plates are heavy AF, cause rounds to fragment which means shrapnel to your face generally, and if you were to get tagged with a a steel plate, it's going to knock the wind out of you at minimum.

This isn't a military or police item though. No one is trying to wear this for days or weeks at a time, we aren't trying to hump 5 miles a day with a rucksack of gear on our back. 4 lbs per side isn't a small amount of weight, but its not huge and the cost savings is considerable.

level IV plates.

those types are pretty much "one and done" if they're ever hit. plus they have a shelf life since most of them are ceramic. at least with steel, they'll take some abuse before failing.

pros/cons... weigh them. figuratively and literally.

also, level iv might be overkill. don't want to deter you since i got III+, but who's going to be shooting 30-06 black tips?

Let there be a glitch in the EBT system and there will be enough chaos to warrant a shelter in place at our homes for a few weeks. Keep that in mind if you're not in a city, you may be safer locked in at home than to try to traverse the roads to get to your big out location.

Friday there was a report of a person on campus with a gun. Lockdown activated, SWAT teams called in., roads blocked, etc.

Just out the blue I get a text from my kid "I love you" then they texted me the school was on lockdown.

The thought of having a Uvalde situation or other active shooter and realizing that all my ammo is worthless if you take hits.
and you think you could have gotten on campus to do anything about it?

EBT would be minor - unless prolonged....

bug out heck no... staying home got everything I need and can defend save for RPGs.

Look back to after the LA riots - and look at NOLA in the aftermath of Katrina and the POLICE went door to door taking guns from LAW ABIDING citizens. Power grid, comms or water failure - nobody would have to invade america any of those three would create chaos never before seen.

I was assured by a deputy, via phone call, there would be no need for me to go on campus that day. Every available parish deputy, Gonzales PD, and 2 SWAT teams were on campus. I didn't leave the house, I didn't want to get in anyone's way of doing their job.

However, it was the first time I gathered together "stuff" to prepare to go before a call came in. That's when I realized I should have bought protection some time ago.

I started researching these and didnt get too far, but I did pick up 2 of these.
Safe Lite Defense

Put one in my son's backpack and told him to keep it in there as it may help is something goes down. Told him to run away and use as a shield.

Not heavy at all. Call me crazy.

I plan to do more research but a lot was out of stock.
