For a First Time AR-15 Owner: Buy or Build?

I'm ready to get an AR-15. I'm good with working on things and like the idea of building one, but not sure if that is the route to go at first. If I buy one off the shelf, what brands do y'all recommend?

I built my 1st one as well as the next 6.

Someone told me when I bought my first AR that they were like jeeps, you can spend as much or more on aftermarket shite than the original purchase price. That said, I bought my first AR from windham weaponry and it’s been a solid entry level gun. Since I’ve built my own using PSA lowers and magpul kits. No complaints using PSA and magpul. Obviously there is much nicer stuff like Daniel defense, bravo company, etc. The Springfield saint has recently piqued my interest as well. Never held or shot one though.

Buy a complete upper from BCM, Noveske, Aero, etc. depending on budget, then build the lower.

How much are you wanting to spend?

I have a Ruger 556. It's been solid.

Same, ruger 556 has not disappointed.

Mine hated that cheap arse Russian Tulammo. Just FYI is you haven't bought any yet don't. Every other brand it's been flawless with.

Buy. They are so inexpensive right now for a basic AR.

Not to derail your thread, because I'm interested in the answers to your question also, but I'm a little curious, especially following the thread on hunting with and AR or was an AK?
I own a handful of guns, but no AK or AR. I have shot one, but I don't even recall what it was. It did get the adrenaline going though.
But I'm vaguely interested. What's the difference between an AK vs AR? And what's the difference between on of these vs. say an average rifle that used for deer hunting? If for no other reason, I need to know this as I continue to ask non gun folks "if it was brown would it be an assault rifle?"
If this seems like a derail, someone say so and I'll start another thread.

An AR is capable of shooting several different calibers. I’m only aware of two in an AK.
An AK is stamped sheet metal
An AR is aluminum
One is red blooded American gun, one is a commie gun.
Typically an AR is more accurate
Typically an AK is more reliable (runs no matter what).

Buy your first then build after that. I’m just letting you know that will end up owning multiple FYI

Buy a complete gun, and also buy 2 or 3 stripped lowers. I’ve seen them as low as $30 a piece. If you ever get the envy to build you have your lower ready to go.

As little as possible.

But seriously, I'd like to keep it under $1K.

What bbvdd said plus an AR is generally direct impingement and AK is a gas piston system.

quote:That's really easy right now. There's a build tax so full rifles are more expensive than buying an upper and lower separately. Buying an upper and lower separately is probably the cheapest route. Palmetto State Armory has rifle kits that have everything but a stripped lower for $350. Add a $50 lower to it and you're gtg for $400 and a transfer fee. I have one of their pistol kits on a poverty pony lower and it shoots well. It's eaten steel cased stuff, XM855, Hornady Critical Defense ande some Black Hills stuff without the first failure of any kind. It's reasonably accurate for a 10.5 inch gun.
I'd like to keep it under $1K.

In that case, you might try Palmetto State.
If I were looking for something simple and cheap, this is the rifle I'd buy. Their premium barreled rifles are also pretty good for the money. They won't be as consistently excellent as more expensive rifles and shipping can take forever, but they're solid rifles for the money.

PSA.

Colt 6920.
There's also the Spike's Tactical M4 for roughly $700 on Locked Loaded and the BCM M4 Mod 0 for roughly $900 also on Locked Loaded.

Build build build. It’s fun and satisfying. I’ve now moved on to building polymer 80s
