Do I need to go full Bart’s Bay armor? I have some water shoes that work well in the surf but I’ve heard the horror stories about getting barbed by a ray in the Achilles.

What do y’all use?

Most people just wear an old pair of tenny shoes.

Worst pain I’ve ever experienced.
Got me in my foot. I was in water a little over my ankle.

Treatment is really hot water and stick what ever got jabbed in the water.

Cheap water shoes will work fine. Don’t take big high steps. Drag your feet a little when possible.

I've been stung twice...in the same damn foot.

I hate stingrays with a passion.

That's what I do. Or should I say "did", it's been a long time.

If you want to wear with waders get lace up boots

If not get the zipper boots

I have a pair of each. No they will not stop a stingray barb

I don't get my arse in the water much anymore

I wasn't stung fishing, just hanging on the beach. The first time I was throwing a football and landed on one in maybe 2 inches of water.

The second time I was taking a piss.

The lace up boots really are worth it. Ive had a pair of Simms Ive been wearing for the past four years. They fit over my wader socks so I wear them year round. You can find discounts on old stock or Ebay

I wear Bart's. I mean, why not? You have to wear something and stingray barbs are no joke buddy. I know 2 buddies who have been stuck, and I don't want that shite happening to me after seeing theirs.

I wear the Bart's wet wading or in breathables, but I would consider wearing Simms Salt Flats or something like that during the winter in breathables. Just haven't needed to wear anything other than the Bart's since getting them a few years back.

I just sized up 2x and wear neoprene socks under them when wet wading in the spring/summer

Old tennis shoes and drag your feet. You don't need anything fancy.

I've been wade fishing the Gulf coast for 25 years. It's a passion of mine. I drag my feet. I also use each foot to sweep in front of me like I'm drawing a line in the sand. Used everything from flip flops to steel shank rubber boots. If it's something you enjoy and will be doing a lot, I would invest in a pair of ray proof boots. No brand recs as one of the most important parts is comfort. If they aren't comfortable you won't wear them. They all offer some protection but are not 100% foolproof. If you are just going to the beach for vacation, academy has some reasonably priced "booties". You will be fine.
