Broke my little bow plot up this weekend. It's in a spot where I can't get big equipment, so use a tiller. It was hard as a rock. Thought we were going to get some rain this weekend, but looking less likely. Decided not to throw out the seed and hope we finally get some rain.

Disking today in woodville. It’s bone dry on the surface but surprisingly the plots are breaking up ok.

Mine was the same when I disked last weekend. The ground is so dry it got past the rock hard staged and just crumbled.

Yep..if we can manage a little rain they will really break up good when we plant on the 21st.

GFS model shows 1-2" of rain next Thursday night/Friday morning (10/12-10/13). Will believe it when I see it.

I'm wondering if I should go ahead and disc the plots I planned on disking (the ones with bare ground) now before the little rain because it would break it up better...

what do you think?

Its only like three small plots

I did 9 of them today. I broke up better than i thought . I always break up the ground at least twice before seeding and have good plots as long as Mother Nature cooperates.

I drew a rain turtle in the middle of my plot, so I did my part

Curious question why disc if you have a drill?

Because the ground is so dry and hard from the drought it’s like concrete and the drill wouldn’t penetrate.

Wow! That's something.

I helped a friend last weekend and drilled about 35 acres it worked well even in dry ground. I guess I have a large drill it could be a lot heavier to get it through the dry ground.

It’s so dry at the farm we can’t even get steel t-posts in the ground. Never seen anything like it. Cracks 2-3 inches wide and 2-3’ deep. It’s bad. Maybe had 0.75” of rain since May. Hopefully El Niño will provide a wet winter that it’s supposed to.

Mine are cut, plowed, and disced right now. Buying seed tomorrow and planting Saturday if we don't get too much rain Thursday and Friday. Leaving for Wyoming Tuesday so it's now or never for me.

Update from Wilkinson County (Woodville area) on our plans

Seeds have been purchased and picked up.

Using 60 gal 3 point PTO boomless sprayer to kill the standing vegetation this week. Plan on planting at the end of the month, first week of November or after solid rain. Whichever comes first.

Northern Claiborne Co still dry as a bone. We got trace moisture Thursday but not enough to make any difference. However having 120 acres to get planted and the chance of tropical moisture in the forecast I rolled the dice and drilled about 40 acres in our fields along the Big Black as they tend to stay wet longer with less rain. Hopefully it works, waiting on more consistent rain fall going forward but potentially will drill some more this week/weekend.

Supposed to get some decent rain in Liberty this week. Hopefully it softens the soil a bit bc I'm going to disc and plant on Saturday after a morning hunt.
