Fishing knots....does it make a difference what kind?

After losing a few fish and having my line break a few times recently I started trying to improve my knots. All of my issues happen with worm or similar plastic baits that I don't have as much experience with. (Grew up mainly throwing spinners, cranks or jigs). Triline or improved cinch are the basic knots I use. But I'm trying to understand other knots and if certain lures perform better with certain knots....or if it's just personal preference.
I found a pretty good app for tying knots but it doesn't give info on which situations for each type. Any good references for that info?
Does the type of lure or line your using change the knot you use?

"Snake" knots are for snoopy poles. I tie a palomar for everything. Carolina rigs are tricky, but doable if you figure out the right order to tie the knots in.

Been tying the same knot since I was a boy, Never had a problem with losing my hook or lure.

I pretty much use the Palomar knot for everything. Especially braid

uni knot or power snell for mono up to 80lbs then crimps
palomar for briad
Mono needs to be replaced every year. You will get a bad spool of line ever now and again also. Test it with a scale and see where it is breaking. That will teach you about your knots and line.

Never had a problem with improved clinch for both freshwater and inshore.
Offshore I tie nearly everything with a palomar except for leaders

I use uni-knots for everything with zero issues. Only change is when using braid, run the line through the eye twice before starting the twists.

Yes, the knot matters. There are different knots for different rigs and different situations. Every fisherman should own THIS BOOK imo.
Much more of what is in it is applicable to saltwater, but it covers all the useful knots that you would use in freshwater too. It also give you tips on tying knots that you won't find in apps.
ETA to fix link.

San Diego jam knot. Except with braid.

Non slip loop for just about all applications. Sometimes I'll use a clinch knot if I need something to have a little quicker sink rate. Double surgeons if I need to tie on a few extra feet of tippet.

Polomar for everything except when fishing flouro or flipping. Best knot for flipping is a snell knot.

Explain your reasoning for me. I use palomar for everything. I do have issues with line snaps on hook sets though.

Palomar knot for most applications. if you use it don't let the line get in the hook crimp on the final snug. You will weaken your knot.
Loop knot for top water. Esp walking the dog. Can't be beat for action.
FG knot for attaching mono/fluoro leader to braid. Can't be beat if you are using braid. I still use a Double Uni if no braid on the rod.

I use a version of the improved cinch that I learned when I was 10 and have never had an issue. Saltwater leaders I use uni to uni.
I think far more important than the type of knot, unless you're really pushing the lower limits of line test, is learning to tie whatever knot you use without burning it or not getting it fully snugged down. I've found too many twists can do more harm than good depending on the line size. Also if a knot is improperly cinched down it can slip and appear to have broken when it didn't. Not wetting line when cinching it down can cause friction burns and it will fail.
Practice practice practice. Tying knots is a good way to pass the time on a weeknight when you have the itch to go fishing but can't. I lean towards finding one knot you're confident with and learning to tie it well, but there will always be people who swear by application specific knots.

With the line running down through the eye off the hook on the snell knot, it allows the hook to move "straight" when set rather than at any angle.

Palomar knot is easy and can be used for everything.

quote:nope. i have had too many lines slip or break using a palomar off shore. to swivel, uni is the only way to go. braid to mono, uni to uni, if you have time. Albright if you are in a rush.
