Anybody ever canoe/kayak the buffalo river around Ponca or Pruitt area and fish? Making a trip up there in about 3-4 weeks and would like to wet a line. I hear they have smallmouth, largemouth, and spotted bass. Any advice on tackle I should bring? Trying to limit the amount of gear I have to carry with me. Thanks for any advice.

Will have a great time.

We fish ultralight rigs usually when we go tipped up with pumpkinseed or gold flake Gitzit. Little weight as possible. Throw into slack eddy of the rapids. Lots of nice smallmouth hang out there.

Don’t waste a lot of time fishing the slack water banks as you paddle. Not much other than goggleeye and bream for your troubles.

If nothing is biting tie on a 1/8 oz rebel crank crawdad. However those big smallies are tough to catch using them. Hard to fish them correctly in the shallow rapids and eddys. Why we stick with soft plastics. Quality over quantity.

This out caught every single thing we threw. It's all I would bring honestly.

Better hope for some rain before you go if you are wanting to float/fish that far up the river

Beatle spin lightweight gear. Upper river around Ponca I catch a lot of goggleeye as mentioned above and lots of rock bass. In my experience, smallmouth I caught were further down the river. I do 2 day trips starting in Ponca and always catch nice ones on the second day.

Years ago we put in at Jasper, white watered, then fished to Ponca. Caught a lot of bream, a few smallies. Ultralight is the way to go. We did best on beetle spins best I recall. Went by Hole in the Wall, rounded the corner to find a herd of cattle in the river, did some back paddling. Beautiful area.

Throw a green pumpkin Ned rig on a 1/16 oz jig head. Or pb&j.

I am jealous. Hope you have a super time there, Even if you don't get to fish, you'll still have a blast.

I did a 2 1/2 day trip two summers ago the last weekend in July. Got lucky on the river level. We seemed to catch the most fish on a tube jig, pumpkin seed and watermelon and maybe June bug. The crawfish crankbaits seemed to catch bigger smallies and only seemed to work in the slower deeper parts of the river. It seemed pretty easy for never having caught a smallmouth before.

Did a float a few years ago and it was awesome. The fishing is great and what others have said is spot on.

We floated the lower Buffalo and ended in the White River--even caught a few Rainbow Trout right where the Buffalo hits the White River.

Thanks for all the great replies. We are waiting to decide which section to float until we know what water levels will be like. The outfitter said he expected we should be able to put in near Ponca or Pruitt for a 3 day float, but you never know. I'm really looking forward to it and it sounds like it should be easy to pack light on the fishing gear. I'll give a report when we get back.
