I’m not going to say deer is the absolute best thing in the world to eat, but maybe some of y’all need to learn how to cook it better. I can make a few things that are pretty good with deer meat.

So can i. But why settle for "pretty good", when I can make ground meat that is good and useful in way more applications

You just need to learn how to cook and clean it right. Duck (puddle duck) medium rare is one of the best game or fish meats you can eat if you don’t overcook it and turn it into a hockey puck.

nutria is some of the finest eating in Louisiana

I agree. I've had nutria several times and it makes a fine gumbo with andouille sausage thrown in for good measure.

Last time I fixed it I seasoned the meat and grilled it just enough to put a nice sear on the meat before adding it to the pot and it came out great.

as mylsuhat said it could be mishandling the meat as well.

Went on a spring hunting/fishing/camping trip with a bunch of baws and I was getting set up to cook a hind quarter roast and a couple of them were giving me shite saying I was about to make jerky. Cooked it medium rare and they couldn't eat enough of it. Made a stuffed deer heart and they couldn't get enough of that either.

Maybe “pretty good” is the apex of my cooking skills.

I didn’t care much for salmon at first. Went to Seattle this year and ate some at the fish market. The jerky and smoked belly were absolutely fantastic.

Back in my poverty days it was my turn to host a football game party. I went out and killed 5 or 6 nutrias. I ran them through a meat grinder and made a big pot of chili with them. Nobody asked what the meat was. Yeah, it was chili and that can cover up a lot of bad flavors but these were folks who wouldn't eat squirrels because they look like rats

I was agreeing with you. I can make some of the other deer meat "pretty good" and did so for a long time.

THen I thought to myself, "why the hell am i eating something that isnt great just to do it"

I like to eat wild rabbit, don't get me wrong. There is a guy at our camp that raises rabbits for the sole purpose of eating them. He makes a bit pot of smothered rabbits in a ton of onions and a pot of whitebeans. It's unbeatable

We had one wild rabbit in the pot a couple years ago and it was obvious. Much tougher

Fresh pacific coho salmon is divine.

Atlantic salmon is dog shite.

The whole point of the joke is, it’s not the deer meat holding ME back. My cooking skills peak at pretty good.

Wild turkey is another one.

Hell I’d rather just feed the coyotes with it after taking a pic.

Agreed. I haven't cooked it a way that I don't like yet. After killing some specklebellies this year though, that is the best damn flying meat ever. So good.

Catfish is the worst.
I'll only eat it if I'm at a dinner so as not to hurt the host's feelings.

Fried fish in general is overrated.
Give me blackened or grilled.
Hell, baked is even better than fried.

Lastly, crab. Too much damn work.
Give me shrimp or crawfish or lobster or massive crab legs any day.

We always ate both because we hunted wild, then bought raised from a neighbor. Raised was just so dry to me. The back legs were basically inedible for this white meat hating person.
