South Zone in Texas opened this past weekend. We hunted the marsh South of Anahuac. It was actually pretty good Saturday morning. Ended up with 28 between 6 shooters. Mostly teal with a few greys and the Mottleds were thick. However you can’t shoot those for the first 5 days of an opener and they obviously read that regulation. Sunday was dead even though conditions were perfect. Birds probably moved to North zone stuff or East to Louisiana. Even the Mottleds left. What else is odd is that we saw no whistlers and they were obscene during teal season.
We hunted south of El Campo and had a near 4 man limit on Sat. Mostly BWT, splash of GWT, and one dumb Spoonie. Few pintail in the sky but they were cruising and not willing to work. Sunday was similar.
Don’t think this season is gearing up to be good unless we get some severe cold

That’s not been our experience. The combines now are much more efficient (if set up right) than years past. You can walk behind a corn header and barely find a grain of corn on the ground.
That said, I think land forming has had a major impact. Fields that used to hold water naturally in winter and flood into woods no longer do that, swags in fields don’t exist, etc. I have a theory this unnatural practice actually affects invertebrates and other natural food sources for dabbling ducks too.

Agreed unless it’s very old equipment there isn’t much spillage today. For the cost of equipment farmers wouldn’t put up with it.
I haven’t thought about land leveling being a factor but it probably is to a degree. Our place will only hold water if we have an Ark type rain, in November of 2000 it happened. Mallards were landing on turn rows and walking into the field, no room to land amongst those in the water.

Is there anyone who knows why the hell the East Zone veterans and youth duck open the same day (before the regular season) but the West Zone youth opens before and veterans is after the regular season?
Has to be in the interest of a commissioner or something

Damn near every field I’ve been in the last few years has a ton of milo or corn on the ground. I laughed at the guide in KS when he yelled at me for kicking corn cobs under the snow, said I was baiting.
I’ll start taking pics for you guys.

Could be they are leaving some on purpose
Making money on crops and ducks

I don’t think the grain guys are doing well this year. Cattle guys are printing money.

I could not agree with you more! I’ve been at it over 50 years and they have never been this few in number.

No
The combines are more efficient but the yields are much higher so even it they are leaving less than 1% of the ground there is still plenty of crop left out there

That’s fantastic, and I am always glad to hear a good report! Congrats to your son.

Really don’t know. They drove close to 400-500 miles Thurs and Fri scouting.

We hunted Pecan Island sat and Sunday for the youth opener. We saw a few ducks but nothing to get too excited about for this coming opener. We did see more pintails and widgeon than normal down there. There was a few nice flocks of gray ducks and some decent teal flocks. I think we should be able to scratch out 10 or so per blind this weekend if they stick around. Hopefully this front brings some more down. We did see more high ducks Sunday than we did Saturday.

We hunted just north of welsh, not much we got 4. However, this morning i did see thousands of divers riding that front south.
