Pot Roasted ducks (especially teal) are the ticket. Its not hard hard to cook a duck it just takes a little time
I agree with this and I will take to time to pick a big duck. As far as teal it really depends. That said, that is your opinion and mine. The guy I'm talking about just doesn't like to eat duck. I'm not trying to change his mind, just wondering who else knows a guy like that.

I pick all pins, woodducks and teal. Pins and woodies go in a baking bag. Teal get split along the back, coated in yella mustard, and cooked low and slow in a black pot. Om nom nom.....
Mallards are either given away or gumbo. Not made up my mind on Gads yet.

Hate might be a strong word. I just think you are missing out on a one of the best rice and gravys there is by breasting a duck. Dont get me wrong I will breast some spoons and make some for the grill.

Well of course If i'm ever gonna make a rice and gravy I will pluck the thing, but until then, i'll take the 30 seconds to breast it.

I tend to pick big ducks and teal until I have enough put away for the season. Pot roasting them right is excellent and can even be enjoyed by people who don't like the gamey taste. If the birds have pin feathers that are too numerous to deal with I will breast out and pan fry, grill, or grind into chili. One of the most under rated ducks out there for cooking is the grey duck in my opinion. They are often fatty and I like them much more than mallards.

I go on a guided pheasant hunt in SD every year. As a matter of fact, we're going next week. When I get home with my birds I keep em in the freezer till next year when the crabs are running and use them for crab lines.
I've had a few people give me shite about it, but I just tell them that I will gladly trade 2 or 3 pheasants for 12 dozen crabs!!!
And btw, I've done the same thing with dos gris and gotten some crazy looks at the wiers.

Most of mine gets breasted, cut into chunks, soaked in salt water for a day or so, then fried.
Kids tear it up.
I have some other recipes as well--- whole teal in an oven bag with water and Lipton Onion soup mix is excellent! But the old standby poppers and the fried stuff is the ticket for non-game eaters.
I see a big difference in soaking chunks/strips vs whole birds as far as meat taste.

The president of my best friends deer camp, he and his wife eat some sort of deer meat for EVERY SINGLE MEAL!! That would just be miserable to me.

Thread hijack: how do y'all do duck gumbo? Any different from chicken and sausage gumbo or anything out of the ordinary?

Not a duck hunter but if I was I don't think I would eat it...I have had duck just about every way imaginable and have yet to have any I liked. Now I am a deer hunter. I do eat deer...

My wife and I eat deer and duck on the reg. Anytime we have some sort of roast or anything with ground meat it's always deer. About the only beef we eat is when we eat steaks. I don't duck hunt as much as I used to, but we used to eat a lot of ducks. As a matter of fact, duck is my wife's favorite. Kudos to anyone that makes a "duck meat" joke.
