Been using climbing stands for 35 years. Never had a bottom fall out until today. Made three big no-no errors. Was going In for 20 min tops to feed and hang climber.
Didn’t let anyone know I went
Left phone in truck
Didn’t attach rope to lower portion
Went up tree for a quick look at trim job. Bottom went all the way to ground. Spent an hour pondering the issue 30 feet up the tree. It was a very large gum tree. Finally had no choice but bear hug the hell out the tree and scoot Down. Both arms are torn up but I’m alive.

I always have the bottom section attached to the top section. Glad you didn't die or get seriously injured.
Falls kill way more hunters than guns do.

I've done the same thing on a slick pine and was also 25' - 30' feet up, I sat there for two hours getting my courage up.

Many years ago climbing a tree with one of those ole Baker tree stands it happened to me .
Until they came out with the little hand piece you used to pull yourself up, you had to hug the tree to climb.
I bought one of those and had gotten up about 15 ‘
When I looked up just in time to catch a tiny piece of bark in my eye. A sudden shift of weight toward the tree sent me and the stand straight down. Lucky I bear hugged the tree and kept my feet in the straps,
Tore up my shirt, arms and fingers on the way down. Even had scratches on my nose and forehead.
Then had to bear hug the tree back up to the hand climber and finish the hunt.
Made of plywood and aluminum, those stands were terrible. I sold that one after climbing a pine tree on a windy day and having the tree sway and the stand suddenly drop down a few inches as the tree flexed.
About 3 episodes. I went down and never used it again. Traded it for an ole 22 .
Bought a new one a year later. Worlds of difference in safety and comfort.
ATI or API?

What brand?
Mine(API) can't do that.

API is the bomb. I tried a summit. It was comfortable once I got settled, but the bite felt nowhere near as safe as an API.

Until you have been up a tree 15-20 feet and had to turn around and sit in the foot platform of a baker. You ain’t lived
I can feel my hamstring cramp just thinking about getting back up to go down
But on the old Amackers, they could walk down a tree in a heartbeat. And all they had was that bar to hook you feet under...so wet boots or muddy boots you could lose it at any time. I never tied my two together. I bet I hooked my legs on the tree and slid out from the top and bear hugged down 6-7 times in my youth.

I had this happen once. I stood up on the seat, hooked my feet in, bear hugged tree and climbed down. Was pretty intense while trying to stand up on the seat. Plus I had my rifle slung on my back. Pretty sure I kissed the ground when I got down.

Maybe others need it repeated so they never attempt it.
USE A ROPE ON YOUR CLIMBER

I learned that lesson about 30 years ago on Christmas Day. I remember it vividly. I have an API with no rope tied to it, I was only up about 15 feet though. It fell all the way to the bottom. I finished my hunt and "dipped" my way out so I could fall out. The next day I carried a rope and tied it up. Have had the bottoms fall out since but, that rope was attached.
I haven't had any issues with my summit stands. They grab and stay grabbed. So far at least.

Well, like I said, I just stuck the stand in the tree and went up for a quick check of limbs. But yes, definitely stupid not to attach rope to the base. I have a summit viper and love it. No issues ever. This is an API I bought last year because they were out of the Summit and I felt they were comparable. This api has basically a motorcycle chain with rubber around it, and the blade at each end of the base and top are 100% geared for non penetration of the tree, but rather pressure of weight to keep it in place. The fact it was a gum tree with a fairly slick bark (not course like oak) all played a part. Scared the crap out of me for sure so I’m going to swap the api for my summit
