Personally, I dont see a difference in killing a buck as a 4 point or waiting til he is a 10 point, its the same deer and I cant do shite with antlers.

I understand where you're coming from but I think it would improve public land hunting if people wouldn't shoot anything that walks.

We have 70 acres and had 2 130+ inch 8 points killed in our first 2 seasons on this land, and if not for a noise at the wrong time we would have have a 140+ 8 point killed with a bow and arrow this season.

We are connected to 2 other landowners who follow the same rules we do.

And nobody is going to stop you from doing it.

If I think shooting spikes is fun why should somebody stop me? Because it infringes on what they think is fun and they>me?

My opinion:

3 points or better on a side and go back to doe days.

Easier to regulate the harvest.

Says the guy that farms deer in a high fence

Read what I said. A guy with 300 low fence acres that budgets 1200 to get in a club will spend more time disappointed than satisfied if he is trophy hunting and can't control outside influences

The problem with antler restrictions is multifaceted. Dont get me wrong, I support QDMA and joined up back in the 90's when it was still in its infancy. Deer hunting should be about comraderie as well as the chance for a big buck. We've lost sight of that in the past two decades. Its all about the big buck now. I quit deer hunting a few years ago and when big bucks became a traded commodity like a prize steer.

Some areas simply dont produce big bucks and how do you address them? Points? Width?

Another problem that gets overlooked is the impact on future generations of hunters. Those little bucks mean a lot for keeping kids interested in hunting. There needs to be a way to allow harvest of young bucks by kids. If we dont then we risk losing them to video games, etc.

I hunt no fence, I used high fence in an example earlier. I spend about 400 on food plots. I would never step foot on a high fence lease.

I'll add that loss of habitat is huge. CRP going to crop and hardwoods being replaced by pines.

Louisiana should do the 3pts. on one side rule... Same as Arkansas. Folks here would be shocked how large our herds could grow.

Not trying to stop you from doing anything, just refuting the statement that managing a place is "not very fun" but maybe I read it wrong

Not everybody is overly concerned about "growin huge bucks"

The big bucks are there already. No matter where I go there is always a trail camera picture of a buck bigger than anything they've killed in 10 years. Management isn't going to make him any bigger. He's old as shite and maxed out. Introducing genetics is the only way to change that.

I'm referring to how large our antler sizes could grow.

I would impose a penalty on hunters that harvest a whitetail deer that is lesser than 3pts. on one side.
Require hunters who chose to kill lesser deer to forfeit the rest of their hunting tags for the season. If you want to kill a small buck, go for it, but you'll have to forfeit your tags.

You are correct that genetics are a huge part of it. But if someone cut you down when you were 2 I doubt you'd be the size you are now.

Growing big bucks is not a concern with me right now. I'm a meat hunter. Would I like to kill a trophy? Absolutely. But I'll be damned if the man is gonna tell me what kinda buck I can shoot on my own land.

I also run dogs on my land. :omg:
