I think the OP caught the shite he did because he made it obvious that he wanted it because it "looked cool" and was "tactical" after clearly stating he has never owned a gun. I dont think anyone is questioning his right to do anything let alone own an "assault rifle". It just doesnt look good for us (responsible gun owners) when you open the newspaper and read "ASSAULT RIFLE" across the front page because someone with zero experience shot his neighbor while trying to figure out how to strip an AR when never even owning a BB gun. I know that is kinda worst case scenario but the chance of something like that happening is significantly higher when your dealing with someone with no experience that just wanted the gun because it looked cool and he saw it on a video game.

I can't believe there are people that can't get this point! Geez people calm down. No one said he shouldn't buy a gun. It's just the way the OP started off this thread and his later post showed that he just wanted to buy it because it looked cool.

I want you to go prove this point right now. I bet you find multiple articles about people being shot with shotguns and hunting rifles and none about an AR.

Why would field stripping an AR cause it to fire? And why wouldnt this happen with any other weapon?

I still cant find an incident with an AR, but I found plenty of hunting "accidents" by people who were familiar with guns.

Just think of the horror if these "hunting" guns had 30rd magazines.

How many more shotguns and hunting rifles are there compared to ARs? 1000s of times more?

Is your point that ARs are safer than other rifles?

what about a 10/22 with a cool AR style conversion look to it? It's an AR, no its a 10\22. It's safe but complicated and deadly deep thoughts

just kiddin I see points on both sides

Prove what point, that having ASSAULT WEAPON plastered across the newspaper is bad for the people that like to legally own them? Ok...

good enough??

I never said field stripping it would cause it to fire but with no experience that person may forget to do some of the basic things we do before stripping a gun, like make sure it isnt loaded.

No, but it surely isnt anymore dangerous. Just so happens that nobody can provide an accident involving an AR.

Now take the rest of what you wrote and not just part of it.....

dude come on... I never said "I opened the newspaper and read about some guy cleaning an AR and accidentally shot his neighbor". I just listed a possible scenario.

IMO the best way to learn anything is to get out there and do it yourself. If the guy is serious about owning one it isn't like there is no information on the function of these rifles. Spend an hour or so on AR15.com and he will have everything he needs to know especially if he doesn't intend to build his own.

Did you read the first comment below the article? It appears that guy is attempting to have the same argument we are.

Good call, totally forgot about that one.

Here is a good quote about an AR:

quote:

An AR-15 by definition does not qualify as an assault rifle, as it is incapable of selective fire. (ie. Full Auto, Burst, etc) It is and always has qualified as a sporting or hunting rifle because it is just that, a rifle with which to hunt, target shoot, or God forbid the need arise defend ones self.

I sure as hell dont need you to tell me what an AR-15 is. I can go check the 2 in the safe if I needed a reminder. You dont even know what point you are trying to argue man. The OP caught flak cause he came here asking if he needed a permit to by an AR becuase he wanted one cause it was tacticool. If you need to ask if you need a permit you dont have any business owning one.

If you were raised in a non-gun owning house and never even stepped foot into a gun shop i could see how you could ask the permit question. I would think for a total gun noob the process could seem a little intimidating.

Why? Would you say the same thing if he asked it about a BAR .270?
