Why? Because it fires more than one round each trigger pull.

Okay, I need some clarification here. We are talking about a semi-auto AR right? Where are we getting "more than one round each trigger pull"? Sorry, I am trying to catch up with the thread and this stood out.

Either of those rounds will kill anything in North America with a few well placed shots. If you want to make this all about hunting why not get a M1 Garand. Far more complicated than the AR IMO but none the less a military rifle that would make an excellent big game hunting platform.

Ummm, I don't see how that makes it a hunting round by any means. "Hold still while I shoot you a few times."

I'm not saying that these won't kill an animal, just that they aren't optimal.

This shoots a full .30-06 rifle round. Completely different.

No gun is optimal for everything. but it is hard to beat the AR platform as a good all around center fire semi-auto. Large enough to hunt white tail, can reach out and touch them if need be and fire power is readily available with high cap mags.

Yes we are talking about a semi auto AR. I guess the sarcasm meters are broken. Basically, it fires one round with every trigger pull, so the whole argument about a 30 round mag is stupid.

Sorry bro, didn't catch the sarcasm. I blame the lack of sleep, taking 5 hour energy now.

I'm just saying, you really think it's a good idea for a guy who's never owned a rifle before and is not being trained by anybody except himself to get an assault rifle as his first rifle?
I don't think there's much appreciable difference between getting an AR/AK/other and getting something else. There are many benefits of the AR that make it a good choice and if someone is going to be a dumbass, I'm sure he could wreak as much havoc with a handgun, shotgun or hunting rifle, maybe more so.

For the Outdoor Board, I'm a bit surprised by the same arguments I see from anti-gun folk.

I just read this thread and cringed several times at certain posters who honestly believe the nonsense they spew.

Firearms are one of those topics where everyone thinks they are experts, but few usually are.

Don't even mention me in the same breath as anti-gun. I have 4 assault rifles and anti-gun nuts piss me off more than anyone else.

But I'm for responsible gun ownership, and IMO I just don't think someone's first rifle should be a military assault rifle. If he becomes comfortable with another rifle then decides to get and AR or AK that's great. I just think he should learn how to handle a simpler rifle first, just like I think most of the posters on the OB did.

Call me old fashioned, but I think if you're going to own tools like weapons or really any kind of tool, should know how to use them. And that starts with the basics. IMO something like a .22 would be better to learn the basics on then an AR.

I generally don't even use the term "assault rifle" as it was either created or twisted by anti-gun nuts.

Why? What is the difference?

That's already been discussed earlier in the thread.

I have avoided this thread due to earlier nonsense. Someone please tell me what more could have been said that has kept this damn thing alive this long!

Ive got a couple ideas to keep it going:

1: the term "assault rifle"
2: beta mags (uses and applications)

Deserves it's own thread IMO. Cannot stand the term, mistly because of how the general public views it. I hate that people think a weapon is inherently more dangerous because it looks like a military weapon. But I digress.

Should be banned from the OB.

I'm all for people owning guns, and I'm all for people owning lots of combat-style weapons, mainly because the anti's don't want us to. It's like a big arse to the tree huggers.

With that said, my kids will not be taught how to shoot with an AR. I just don't think it's ideal.

And before you say "this is a grown man, not a kid" remember, somebody who isn't familiar with guns isn't familiar with guns, regardless of age. Can a grown man learn faster than a kid? I damn sure hope so, but they are both starting off at the same place.

Thank you! That's been my point the entire time.

As for the term "assault rifle," I hate it too, I just don't know what else to call that class of weapons. Semi-auto high capacity rifle just takes to long too say.
