As I've stated before, 5.56/.223 has been proven to be useless on zombies unless at very close range. One would need to jump to one of the 6.x calibers in that platform.

They are expensive for one thing.

They're not really for comparable caliber. They can be had for less than a thousand easily.

Another thing is they are fairly complicated. They are relativity difficult to operate,

So the military and a huge number of law enforcement agencies in the US have chosen the most complicated weapon to use and operate?

and kinda a pain in the arse to clean.

You can field strip one with almost no tools. Basic cleaning can be done with shoe laces and a little oil.

Don't get me wrong, I think the 10/22 is a great platform and it will be my next gun to buy. I just think that it can't be any more complicated to break down an AR vs 10/22.

It is far more complicated. A stock 10/22 has maybe 3 moving parts.

While it's not hard to field strip an AR, there are about 3 times as many major components than the 10/22 and 100s of tiny little springs, washers, etc etc that can get lost and make the whole platform ineffective.

I haven't read all of this, but just from shooting various assault rifles, you do NOT want to use this as a home defense weapon. If you miss, which you probably will...the bullet won't stop at the first wall it hits. It will most likely travel into the neighbors house.

Only time I ever recommend shooting an assault rifle is at a shooting range INTO a hill.

still not rocket science. Any grown man can figure out an AR in no time. Under buying to learn is wasting his time on getting what he wants.

first rifle as a kid was a 410 shotgun followed by a 22. I was a child. I did not need a 30.06, AR, 12 ga., 357 pistol, or AK, at that time of my life.
As a grown man do you always by the most simple basic item you can find?

edit: first Gun as a kid

You buy whatever in the hell you want as long as you can afford it If it is good enough to hunt a man it is good enough for anything that walks on four legs.

That's a fail right there.

I'm just saying, you really think it's a good idea for a guy who's never owned a rifle before and is not being trained by anybody except himself to get an assault rifle as his first rifle?

You said your first rifle was a 410. Was probably a type-o, but still.

And, no I mean rifle period.

we all know this is a fine line. First firearm I guess depends on the person. Sure going buck arse wild with a 30rd 223 comapred to a 10rd .22 has the potential to be more deadly. Could a grown man handle the AR without any problems? I guess it all depends on the person. But if the AR is that much trouble, I just don't see a ruger 10/22 being that much more easier. Maybe a BB gun would be better to start off with.

Well, most kids do start out on BB guns.

Just my opinion that if he's getting his first rifle he shouldn't just jump in and get an AR. Just like if he was buying his first car he shouldn't go out and get a brand new Mercedes.

Not really. I don't think the normal assualt rifle (5.56 or 7.62x39) makes a good big-game hunting rifle. It is ok to wound a man in battle, takes up resources to care for him and transport him behind the lines, but simply wounding an animal isn't really an optimal outcome.
