this has been a debatable topic amongst my family and friends. My family with myself included agree, that they do scare them away, to a certain extent. Most of my friends also agree, but i have a few friends that think it does not affect them at all, and one even claims to "shooting deer from his fourwheeler". I told him that our club may be going to all electric vehicles next year to try and minimize noise.. well he just thought that this was the most retarded thing he has ever heard... i was just wondering what you guys thought.. most people in the club park their fourwheelers about a half a mile away from their stand, as do I.. can the noise still be scarring off deer?

Good question but I don't know the answer. Hell I'll park my truck about a half mile away from the stand in the trees..if it scares them off from that far and they don't see anything I would figure they'd come back..

What about the smell of gas, do you think that does anything?

I've had deer jump from my atv only after stopping and setting in the same place for a bit.

I have video of deer in my food plot, 40 yards away, with me and my dad sitting on the 4 wheeler while its still running. the deer by us are used to it. they may take off, but as soon as your gone they will be back.

In my opinion it's not what vehicle you are riding it's just being in the deer woods that pushes deer away.

To me it's all putting pressure on the deer and the less time you spend in the woods when not actually hunting your property the better.

That's what I always figured..as long as you didn't pose a threat to them or if they didn't even see you. They would just figure it a random noise but they are probably used to hearing that sound if they stay on or around your property and y'all ride around and what not.

I don't think it bothers them too much. When we hunted the marsh I would tie my mudboat to the stand. I had a deer come smell it once.

No. I mean maybe if you jump them up. But hell I've shot deer and watched deer come right back with a dead doe laying in the mddle of the plot. If a Gun shot doesn't scare them I doubt a 4 wheeler really does

I agree, I have shot deer and have had other deer walk up to the stand less than 15 minutes after the shot.

Also, one of my buddies shot a huge 10 point only a couple of minutes from being dropped off at the stand from a gas-powered UTV. He said could still hear the engine running when he shot.

the to and from stands during the season should be no problem but wouldnt go joy riding all over your place during the off season.

I would think the "human smell" as the season progresses, scares them off (at least in terms of changing patterns, etc.) more than vehicles.

I know, for example, ducks and even coyotes aren't scared of tractors. I've shot coyotes from a tractor and my grandfather- back in the day- used to drive into ducks lit with a tractor and shoot them. That was at *cough* night with the ducks but still.

I believe that it bothers them to an extent, but its not very much. I've shot deer with the 4-wheeler parked right underneath my stand at less then 100yds. A buddy of mine shot a big 9 point one morning with his truck underneath his stand, that he just drove down a highline in, that was still making the ticking from the hot exhaust. I drove up on a doe eating at a feeder one night on the way back to camp and almost ran into her before she decided she might wanna move. Walking up on deer is different. I've scared alot more deer walking than on the 4 wheeler. My son and I were filling feeders early this season and drove up on one of the box stands. Filled feeders, parked bike in bushes and sat just to sit and wait. 15minutes later doe and two yearlings walked out.

If the deer are used to the sound of atv's no, not usually

but they run away when they hear the engine cut off, pretty smart i guess

:csb:

when I was like 13 I was in a stand bowhunting, a 6 point came out and I was waiting to get a shot on it... when all of a sudden I hear my dad on the 4 wheeler coming to pick me up. The deer went about it's business as the sound got closer and closer and then he ran off when he heard the engine cut off

We don't use our 4 wheeler much on our proprety except when we shoot a deer, most of our plots are walking distance from the camp house.

I think the answer is, it depends on the property. When I used to deer, ATV were associated with hunters. When I walked in during the week, I saw deer on almost every hunt. When other hunters were in the woods with ATVs the deer stopped moving. On that property it mattered, on other properties, perhaps not…

All sound scares deer and you can hear an ATV a lot further than you can hear a truck (unless you're one of the idiots with the loud pipes).

During the season, the only time we ride ATVs is to pick up deer that have been shot. Otherwise we walk to our stands.

I personally do believe that the excessive noise produced by an ATV does have a negative effect on deer. Sure I've killed deer with an ATV nearby, but I feel that it puts the herd on alert and outside of the rut suppresses deer activity.

People using single instances of killing deer with an ATV are using poor logic to determine their opinion on the matter. Bizarre things happen, every deer reacts different. Location, traffic, and hunting pressure all play key factors in this discussion.

I have been significantly more successful when hunting from my Bad-boy buggy.. But hey, if you wanna scare deer from your property over to mine, be my guest.

yes it scares them away at first, but once they get used to seeing the atv frequently they wont mind
