Its time has passed. There simply aren't enough big tracts of land for these dog hunters to run on without encroaching other peoples' property. At least the class of people who are dog hunters around here. I have run across a number of them over the years, they generally fail to impress.

About 8-9 years ago I was looking at a nice 400-something acre spread in Benton County. I liked the look of the place and it had a camp cabin and ponds and good skinning area and a little range set up..

I called the state wildlife biologist to talk about the place and the deer herd.

He said the local reds are going to run dogs on you all season long and out of season, and there aren't enough game wardens to stop them. As a result the bucks don't live long enough to amount to anything.

I did some more checking around and he was telling the truth.

Have fun checking cameras and guarding corn piles. You'll probably kill more deer. You will not have more fun.

Agree to disagree.

This is horseshite. People ran dogs 20x more than today for a hundred years and people killed big bucks back then.

Well, you'll get your wish soon enough. It's dying off fast. My kids likely won't ever get to do it. Yall who have never experienced a big buck being killed on a good dog hunt have missed out. It was a team effort and everybody felt like they had a part of the big buck getting got. It was damn fun. Hunting was better back then.

I believe Col. Tom Kelly covers this hunt very well in the first chapter of The Tenth Legion

They killed them nearly year round dumbass.

And it helps explain why when I was a kid there weren't hardly any deer left most places in the South.

I think feeding anything you can’t grow should be illegal.

I’m on the fence for game cameras. They are fun and allow you to catalog your herd (somewhat) but that takes the thrill out of it.

Running deer with hounds if some of my most fond hunting memories. I wish my kids got to grow up doing it.

If they were killing them year round it wouldn’t matter what method they were using now would it?

Owners and their dogs have zero business on land that isn’t theirs. Simple as that.

I’ll give an example of this for the dog runners on here.

I’ve got a temporary gate for loggers on the west side of the property. The gate cannot be opened by wind. You have to get out and move rebar to open it.

Every other day someone has opened it and not even bothered to close it back up.

You see four wheeler tacks and dog prints.

frick these people. I’m so sick of the excuses. Posted means stay the frick out. One day I’m gonna catch them.

And actually scouting, patterning deer, and using a lock on/climber is a far far more pure form of hunting than just letting dogs loose and letting them drive the deer to you IMO.

Makes shooting deer that come off a neighbor’s property much easier when you can run the deer off that property and on to your own. Especially if that piece of land is only 400 acres

I used to be right there with you. Then our neighbors started spending their money on corn and feeders instead of dog food. The hunting got much, much worse. True story.

You have a trespassing problem, not a dog hunting problem.

Also, if you can’t catch someone that comes in a gate every other day, you aren’t trying.

I do think there is a place for a food source and box stand.

With very young kids, elderly, disabled, and me when it’s raining or I feel like taking someone who’s never hunted before. I like to be in a tree before daylight and walking ridges in the afternoon….in a perfect world

I like threads like this. It’s a spirited debate.

Personally I’m not gonna be happy to exit this life until I shoot a nice buck with my bow… whilst sitting atop a trusty horse.

So you think they stand at the boundary and tell the dogs “go on that 400 acres and run a
deer off it.” The the dog goes onto it, turns the deer to run it off the 400 acres, and they just shoot the deer? You have any idea how big 400 acres actually is? Have you ever tried to put dogs on a deer and make them run a deer in a certain direction?

I’m confident 90% of the people bitching about dog hunters have zero clue what it’s like to hunt with dogs.

As much as I’d like to keep the tradition of running dogs alive. It has run its course, i think it has more to do with the younger generation mindset more than the actual sport. People just lack respect nowadays, and act like technology can’t stop their dogs from crossing a property line. I get it , it may go over a hundred yards or so, but i hate finding them 1 mile into our property. I know they do it purposefully, because they lost the lease to us (because they didn’t pay dues on time) and it ended up splitting their lease in half.

The other big issue i have, is then running the dogs year round on our property as well. And when they are confronted by the wardens, they are “coyote” hunting. But I’ll see the same damn dog in deer season.

If dog hunting as a sport goes away, it will be because of the bad reflection (mostly out of towners) that they paint for themselves. Which is a shame, because there are still some great, honest people left in the world who want to preserve the sport.

If you want to see some of the bad light being painted on the sport, i suggest finding Shawn Wheeler on Facebook and seeing his post about what’s happening locally in his area.
