I'm interested in how deer were hunted in the south 50 years ago.

Today we have game cameras, auto feeders, forums to ask any conceivable deer question, online resources galore, etc. etc.

So, I'd love to hear from any of you "old timers" about how things were different (and the same), what's better and worse or anything else you can recollect.

Thanks in advance.

Update: I just want to say that this thread shows how great the OB can be. I learned a great deal and enjoyed many of the stories. By all means continue, I just wanted to say my expectations have been exceeded and thank you.

When I was a kid in the 70s, my dad, grandpaw
and uncles used to hunt deer with dogs and shotguns.

If this is something the op is interested in a book you may want to read is The Quest and the Quarry. It’s all about history and deer hunting. Kind of a dry read but very interesting and is exactly about the topic you’re interested in

Those were good times and a great way to get kids involved in hunting and teach them the proper way to bullshite.

I doubt I would be a hunter today if the way I was introduced to hunting was having to get up at 4am and go sit in a stand all day staring into the woods.

I just did this today.

It was my third time deer hunting, and haven't seen a deer in the woods yet

Saw some about 10 feet in front of us on the dirty road driving in both times

I like the peacefulness of being out there. 4am sure does come early especially on a weekend.

Supplemented the deer huntjng with a few pheasant hunters, coyote hunt, etc.

Just started to get into shooting/hunting at age 32.

They were hunted with shotguns and dogs.

We did it exactly the same as they did up till about 10 years ago. It isnt nearly the same anymore. Back then it was a group effort and that built great memories. It's a shame my kids wont get to experience that.

Go sit in the woods. See a deer, shoot a deer. That is how it was back then.

I would imagine they were few and far between.

My grandfather was born in 1926 and grew up in mccall creek mississippi which is in SW miss. He was dirt poor and spent lots of time hunting small game. He said he never saw a single deer in the woods when he was growing up.

No regulations, it went similar to the duck story. Market hunting decimated the herd in most areas. My great grandfather told me stories in 1980’s when I was a kid and he was in his 80’s. He moonlighted on the side for a company called Armour. Killed deer as a side job. He wasn’t paid in cash it was in product goods certificates. Everything from tires for his truck and dry goods from the general stores. Not a bunch of cash around after the depression times were way different. 1930’s and 40’s

My dad, uncle, and grandfather were in a lease in the 70’s . They had 12,000 acres and it was 225 bucks a year. That was a lot of money back then for a deer lease.

I’ve got old pictures of my grandpa at the camp with deer that he’d killed.
He never wore camo, didn’t use any scent sprays, cameras or put food out.
Killed 100’s of deer with his old Winchester 30-06 at Raccourci Island back then.

my dad killed a deer in 1968 on OSceola Plantation with a tattoo in his ear. Supposedly one that was brought down to help repopulate the deer herd back in the day.

My dad did most of his hunting at night and was very successful at it. Preferred Gun was a rem 1148 with #1 buck and head lamp to round out his ensemble. You could buy buckshot 25 rounds to a box back then and he gave my grand paw 2-3 back one season. Yep, night hunting, whiskey makin rednecks they were.

We had 55 gal drums nailed in the trees and big nails drove in the tree to access the rims

Your thread reminded me of a picture from a cook book I have.

This little excerpt was good,
