If you dont believe me bring a range finder and i will bring you to the stand and show you where the deer was shot and you can peg the stand. Dont roll your eyes because you cant make the shot and she did lol. Hunting powerlines and pipe lines we make 200-300+ yard shots often. 280 yards for a person that hunts often and has places to shoot that distance is not a hard shot at all
I may have read into his post wrong, but I think it may be the fact that you are boasting about a 280 yard shot, with a gun she has never shot before, having not shot at a deer in a few years, and by your saying you were impressed that she even hit it in the first place leading us to believe that you don't think it was a high percentage shot, that had him rolling his eyes.
Congrats to your wife on the kill. But you'll have to expect some pushback when you are bragging about throwing lead downrange and hoping she hit something vital enough that the deer won't run off in the weeds gut shot and die a miserable, wasteful death.
Again, congrats to her and getting a bit more meat for the freezer.

You put a less than perfect shot on a deer at 300 yds with a .270, it's lost.
I shoot moose at 400 yards with a .270, baw

She didnt do to to bad, the deer was on the opposite side of the powerline which is about 75 yards wide and was slightly quartered away, a few inches back she would have blew the opposite shoulder out but would have had perfect placement, she was good about it when she shot and said she new she jerked which is obvious but i think a perfect behind the should shot at the angle would have blew the other shoulder up, i just couldnt believe the deer made it that far without a front shoulder and the amount of blood that was pooring out it. The day has come where it is more exciting to watch her shoot than me shoot myself plus i have a 2 year old little girl that all she wants to do is get in the stand.
This was actually the day she shot the deer and my little girls first time in the stand, not sure if it is human nature but nobody ever taught her to cover her ears. Man the best days are bringing the little ones in the woods and bringing them up the right way

Good shot.
Wish my wife could shoot that well.
She can hit a silhouette at 200 yards with a .22, but can't hit a water bottle at 50 ft with her .308

Lol my wife was brought up hunting but they hunt in woodville and dont have many places where you can shoot further than a hundred yards but she has impressed me, it may be bad placement but the deer is in the freezer and food is put on the table

Energy from 270 at 300 yds 130gr bullet is about 1660. From a 300 with 180gr bullet 1980. That 300 foot pound difference is not giving you much wiggle room. Both give you plenty room for error.
It's pretty laughable you think a whitetail must be shot with something larger than a 270. He'll the standard for ethical kills on elk is 1500 foot pounds.
Unless you like to do long range shooting, I don't know why anyone would want to shoot a 300 or something similar. It's absolutely overkill inside 300 yards on a whitetail, and it's not fun to shoot either

243 on up to 30-06 is plenty capable of taking a deer at 300 yds. The bigger bullet helps with a blood trail though. I wouldnt get a 300 WM unless I could practice at every distance out to 800yds and I dont have a place to do that.

I have to disagree with you about the 243. They just don't carry enough energy. Hell even only at 100 yards they only have about 1600 foot pounds. That's just around the accteotavke level. I've seen two deer this year hit directly on the shoulder and the bullet must have stopped there because I've seen both deer on camera since alive with wounded shoulders. Will not allow 243 anymore on property. 25-06 at the very least preferably 270

Pics of the deer that survived a .243 shot?

You don't believe deer survive gunshots?
Posted on 1/19/17 at 7:55 pm to Ron Cheramie
I should have sent them to my phone still on camp computer. All it is Are pics of the deer at feeders. One holding its leg up the other pretty obviously keeping weight off the front shoulder. Both kicked the rear legs pretty hard after the shot making me think they were both good heart shots. And I congratulated the shooters but after hours of searching and not much blood tracked I surrenddred. First deer didn't see on camera for multiple weeks. The other was shot three weeks ago and was seen on camera last weekend.

They do and they can. A .243 shot to the shoulder and didn't die ok. But twice Nope

1100 lbs of energy at 300 yds with a 90gr bullet will kill any whitetail if you hit it in the heart/lung area. Its not ideal, but it will get the job done if the shooter does his part.

With that thinking we should all just go out hunting with our 556 ARs....
