My wife managed to run into the mailbox today in my truck and put a huge gouge in the side of it, about four feet long and down to the metal. I’m leaving town on Wednesday for a week and a half so I won’t be able to get it into a body shop for a few weeks. What do I need to do in the short run to keep the area protected (besides never giving my wife the keys again)? Some kind of sealant or something? I don’t want to do something that will make it even more work and more expensive for the body shop but I also don’t want it to start rusting and spreading

I'd beat her so she knows to never do it again, honestly.

There’s not really anything you can do. They’re either going to bondo and sand it way down before painting, or replace the panel.

Yeah they’ll have to sand it way down at the minimum. Guess I’ll just leave it until I can take it in.

fricking hell it’s aggravating. I know shite happens but my lord she literally cut the turn out of our driveway five feet short.

Well I used “gouge” in the post which is more accurate.

I would either get a Duplicolor pen to temporarily cover it so that it doesn't rust or at the very least cover it with some painters tape.

Generally I agree but I’m talking about a slash down the side that can be seen from fifty feet away

Still have it. Got a new Silverado awhile back for my daily. Don’t have the heart to sell my old girl though

Rarely when mine or one of my kids drive my truck I always tell them “if you wreck it don’t come back home.”

You didn't say what my truck is. If it's a F150 it's aluminum so rust won't be a problem.

But that dent would be more like peeling a beer can so I would deduce a GM product.
