Since my first encounter with a coyote as an 11 year old way back in 1976, they have always peaked my interest and I've taken quite a few. But growing up not far from this study area - for decades the older folks always said - they never caught all of the red wolves is SW La and SE Tx.
Looks like those old timers were correct and they indeed breed with coyotes.
It also expains the "black" coyotes which many wrongly thought were coy dogs(which are exceedingly rare).

Couldn’t finish it cause too many big words.
My hood is over run with rabbits and I haven’t seen any coyotes post Laura in town. There were huge packs around the LC airport previously but I haven’t seen them in a long time.
Occasionally I will see a roadkill on 27 but it’s also rare now.

Oh yeah, it has been known and studied forever that the Coyotes in Galveston and to the west into Freeport, etc. are Red Wolf hybrids. I've seen multiple with a distinct red tint to them in Freeport during the day.

Interesting... We have plenty in Jennings. I've had them in my yard during the daytime.

I won’t claim to have dug too deep into it but I was always under the impression it was an accepted fact that hybridization with coyotes as they spread east was what wiped out the red wolf as opposed to outright extinction. Skimming through the paper it seems to imply this was established in the 70’s and is well documented.
Where does it say the black coloration comes from the red wolf? Same as above, have always red this was introduced from dogs and wasn’t very controversial.

I don't believe the black ones are "exceedingly rare". I have seen a couple killed in person and also seen a couple I didn't shoot. In different areas of the state also so it wasn't some localized issue.

Definitely some larger coyotes that look more red wolf than coyote running around Calcasieu and even Beauregard Parish
