We were driving back through Eglin land after a day fishing at Escribano Point WMA and I spotted this healthy cottonmouth coming out of the woods by the road. I've photographed a lot of cottonmouths but have never photographed one in defense mode. I'd take a step towards it and it'd pop its mouth open and slither its tail.

every cottonmouth I’ve ever seen has been the healthiest looking snake I’ve ever seen. They really are a marvel of engineering and evolution

frick all that.
I guarantee you if I came across that thing I wouldn't be hanging around for pictures and video. My old arse would gone with a quickness.

It literally just sat there the whole time like it is in the video and pictures. Didn't move besides the defense posturing. Not scary at all.

A mostly peaceful protest.

A long time ago I happened on a big one coming from my deer stand late morning, and decided to hold his head down with my rifle barrel and cut it off. I thought it best so I wouldn't step on it the next time I came in before daylight.
Damn thing wrapped around the barrel and got his head loose, and I gave him that rifle. Had to cut a limb and kill him to get it back. True story

That's exactly how you would get a bite.

I am not really scared of snakes or am I a snake person. We have had sightings, me personally, of rattle snakes in our sub division here in Florida.
They are absolutely beautiful creatures. But I just could not let this thing live in our sub division. I am sure I will be crucified for it but frick that thing biting someone.

They are definitely the snobbiest snakes in the woods, always got that nose straight up…

It’s a species that’s really taking a hit due to habitat loss. Maybe look into snake relocation experts in your area. If they charge a hefty fee, there are probably local herpers who would relocate them for free.

I was looking for the picture but one lady had one, a big one, just on the outside of her pool cage. She said it went crazy when she walked by to water some of her plants inside the cage.
I had heard in a old sub division I was in that one guy got a bunch of the babies in his garage. frick that.

Your issue isnt what you learnt...its that you needed to actually be taught in the first place

People always say they aren’t aggressive and won’t charge. But my first experience with one up close was with me, my paw paw, and my great uncle who had ptsd fishing on Caddo Lake in a flat bottom boat. The snake dropped out a tree, into the water, then climbed up the transom and got into the boat. I was sitting in between my paw paw and my great uncle in the back who flipped out and nearly rocked us out of the boat. My uncle managed to keep the snake at bay, but we had nothing to kill it with cause it was wrapped around the oar. So paw paw trolled us back to shore to get something to hit it with, when some ol baws pulled up beside us and whacked it with a spent shell casing from a tank one of them had on hand. Good times!
