I am curious how many other states do duck surveys like Ark/MS/LA?
The birds have been on a drastic decline in all three states for over a decade now and the surveys prove it.
So the question is.
Are the birds just staying north? Moved west? Or is there just a lot less birds now? Or most likely, a combination of all 3.

I can only speak for this season and last in TX panhandle, but there is less birds this year. And you nailed it with the decline being a decade in the making in Louisiana. It’s been downhill since 2014.

I encourage you and everyone else asking questions about population decline to listen to The Standard Sportsman podcast episode released on 12/5/24 called "Where are the Ducks? Take 2 with Dave Rave".
Really eye opening science/biology based discussion with a waterfowl biologist with 35 years of experience talking about flaws in surveys, (both population and wetland surveys), the lack of regulatory adjustment since 1996, moving up of seasons in the north, moving back of seasons in the south, hunter mortality effect on population, etc.
The age old adage of "hunting mortality does not effect duck populations" is not supported by science. Which I've been curious about for years.
It was really interesting to hear the science side of things as opposed to the Flyway Federation side of things.

I was under the impression the flyway was moving west- as in ETexas?

Watched that podcast and I really enjoyed it. I’m not sure what would help the duck numbers overall but we obviously need to make some changes. If that’s 30 day season and a reduction in limits then I’m all for it until things improve. If anything it would probably cull out some of the superficial duck hunters

And sadly some guides/outfitters.

One’s man’s sad is another man’s extremely happy. Would love to see the commercialization of duck hunting tone down exponentially.

I would have no issue with a reduction in the following:
- Daily Bag Limit
- Hen Limits
- Season duration
- New age duck hunters
- Outfitters
It's become so commercial that a reduction in all of the above would be good for waterfowl management in the long run.

We only made morning hunts, no afternoon hunts.
1 limit per hunter and it was strictly enforced by the "president" of our club.
Typically only hunted Saturday and Sunday.
Four members in our club and we each invited a guess each weekend.
So, normally 8 people per hunt and each hunter normally got 7 - 10 birds per hunt...according to the point value of the duck

Along with the flat bill nation with the rear squatted trucks and the unbaffled voodoo exhaust on the stage 500000 Gatortails.
I’m all for the younger generation coming up in hunting but some of these kids haven’t been taught the right way. Call me old fashioned call me the old man yelling get off my lawn but it’s true! I’m not saying all kids are bad but there more bad then good! All about getting them instagram pics!

I have listened to both those episodes. I personally believe the population is drastically lower and a lot of people in power are aware or at least have a good idea but choose to ignore.
Ducks are serious business and money generator for a whole host of industries, institutions, and states. Add to the flawed data the bird flu that has been running for 2 years now and we are in serious need of a correction of limits and seasons.
Hell I would be game for even canceling a whole season.
That being said, LA would still be battling the serious degradation of habitat even if populations were not down.

And we haven’t experienced shite yet! Can’t stop what’s coming! It’s over unless we have the means or at the very least, family or friends with means. Enjoy Canada when the birds are brown and naive if you can.

Let’s not be rash…
There are some changes that need to be made but shutting a season down is not going to make a meaningful impact the way other adjustments would.
The sad thing is that habitat loss is a problem that we should all be concerned with, but I see more negative comments about DU than I do positive ones. I’ve even seen people bitching about the duck stamp.
