CHP Renewal - Baton Rouge

Are full length classes required for CHP renewals in Louisiana?
if not, does anyone know an instructor in BR that does abbreviated classes for CHP renewals?

From my experience full length classes are required. I used Gordon Hutchinson for my initial class and I remember the renewals came in an hour or so later and did their shooting first, then joined the rest of the class.
I did my renewal with him just for that reason and we had to show up at the same time as everyone else.
The class is long, but Gordon tells stories the whole time so at least it is mildly entertaining.

This is correct. Same stories and one liners from the class it took 5 years before

Took my initial and a renewal with Gordon (renewal was an abbreviated class). Gordon is a hell of a nice guy, but his class is pretty stale and filled with a lot of non-pertinent information.
OP - full day classes are now required for renewal. I took mine at FRC and it was actually a really good class. That has a lot of good information, some of which I wasn't aware of. The class was a pretty good size, but the renewals were able to shoot first and get out so they didn't have to get stuck behind the new students (some of which I don't think had ever shot a gun before).

thanks for all the responses. Was considering FRC since I am fairly close.

I highly recommend them. Very professional staff.

Renewals are half a day. You show up after lunch.

As for renewals in general, the same requirements apply for renewals as new applicants. The only difference is there is no listed time requirement for renewals. But most instructors that teach high-volume classes can’t wedge students in their classes in the middle so they just choose to do the same class for new applicants and renewals. The lower volume instructors like me can be a bit more flexible but only because of instructing not being my full time job. If I were doing giant classes I’d probably have the same class for everyone regardless too.

Might want to check with LSP on all this. Recently they were requiring all instructors at renewal time (renewal of their certification) to submit a new syllabus and it had to be 9 hours long for ALL students.
This stuff is subject to change every time a new Sgt. takes over the CHP unit. It's been a few months since I talked with them. What you stated is how the statute reads - but LSP can promulgate rules.

I was researching this recently, also need a renewal at some point this year, and realized now renewals have to take the full course. It looks like there is a place in Denham, PD Concealed Carry, that does Zoom classes and then you schedule your time to go shoot later. I'm probably going to try to go that route as it's more convenient for me.

Nice! Thank you.

How long do I have to pay for my renewal license before my recertification certificate is no longer valid? I got my recert done last march at the start of covid, which made things quite difficult at the time to submit it to LSP or where it is you submit it, then just let it slip away.
Also, 2 hypothetical questions.
What is the penalty if one justifiably uses his/her concealed weapon but does not have a permit/permit expired?
What is the penalty for concealing a handgun and gettting caught with it concealed, like inside your waistband or something?

Felonious and will prevent you from ever getting a concealed carry permit again or even owning a firearm.

If I am attacked so much so that my life is threatened, I use my gun in my pocket to dismantle the threat. But since I don't have a concealed carry permit, I am the one at fault. Gotcha.
That is actually saying they(law makers) would rather someone be attacked/killed rather than defend their life with a tool that is made for self protection.

It depends. If you're a criminal with a long record, you'll get a slap on the wrist. If you're a law abiding citizen, you'll get the book thrown at you.
