Not taking sides here but a felony? for some extra weight on a fish?
So you don’t think stealing a 100k is worth a felony?

I think anyone who would waste time, money, attention, etc., on sponsoring or having interest in a fishing tournament deserves to be cheated. What next, watching grass grow?
Bob Sealy has been putting these tournaments on in Texas for years, it's all amateur fishermen and they pay by the hour (10 places) for big bass, then have an overall winner.
Some redneck from Bernice, La won this one and won the following:
A 2024 Phoenix 721 Pro XP powered by Mercury
Minn Kota, Humminbird, Navionics, and Power Pole equipment
A RAM truck
$5,000 cash
It's GOOD WHOLSOME FUN until some a-hole tries to cheat

It’s long been a felony to cheat in a fishing contest with prizes above a certain dollar amount. Several of us on here know a guy that did 6 months for it.
FWIW I know of 4 people that cheated in city park bass rodeo in 80s and 90s - no cash by prizes - 2 edged me out.

Back in the 90s two guys kept turning in bass with unusual wear on the point of their mouths and fins. Eventually got caught having a chicken wire pen back in a little cove.
I can imagine it's tempting as hell. That tournament was 500 bucks plus 250 big bass weekly during the summer. That was a lot of money back then.
It was a night tournament so a guy just followed them with his lights off and watched em. After they left he took the pen and presented it during the weigh in. Entertainment ensued

shoot back in late 70s and early 80s I used to find our crab traps had bass in them.... We would see someone pick up OUR traps and be all perplexed as to where their bass went.

Cheating is cheating, and way more than 100k was at steak in professional sports, but no felonies just fines
Why did they not hit the astros , Brady, or every nascar driver crew chief and owner in history up with a felony ????

No, I have never fished a tournament in my life, never will. Just think they should penalize professional athlete caught cheating with as much a sentence as they do these guys

When the big money’s on the line, it’s worth it to upgrade to titanium weights for cheating.

I disagree, it's more nuanced.
Tonya Harding having her opponent kneecapped before the ice skating contest is a bigger deal than Tom Brady having a slightly under-inflated ball.
Betting money on games you play in, betting against yourself, then having a shitty performance so you lose, but get paid out, is a much bigger deal than Todd Gurley signing autographs for $600.
Cheating is cheating, but they are not all the same.

Why would an angler want to cheat? Are we talking about a massive amount of money, or a brand new boat motor? Just don't get it.

Yes...sometimes both money and a new boat

In this guy's case, meth money.

You'd think they all use metal detectors after the first few guys getting caught doing this. And if it is common practice to use them, what was this guy thinking?
Most big team tournaments use a polygraph around here.

Rookie move.
Long ago, a prominent fishing guide I knew well took a trout one of my friends caught while we were on a charter, and shoved croakers down its throat until it’s gag reflex wouldn’t take any more. Kept it alive in his live well the rest of the week until one of the rodeos kicked off and weighed it in.

There's $$ involved

Cheating is a form of fraud, when the awards get over a certain $$$ it becomes a felony. Doesn’t matter if it’s a fishing tournament, golf tournament, corn hole tournament, etc.
