Canemount WMA in Ms.

Is anyone familiar with the WMA, and if so how is the turkey hunting? Our camp is not far from there, but has zero turkeys on our place. I would like my son to experience a hunt where hearing a bird is possible. Thanks!

Not familiar with it at all. However if not from Mississippi make sure you don’t hunt it the first two weeks. I’m pretty sure most public land is closed to OOS first two weeks.

I think it was draw only for Ms residents last year. Not sure what it was this year. They had 10 or 15 3 day draw hunts, 2 or 3 folks drawn per hunt. $300 permit required if you got drawn.
Edit:
Yup, draw only.

I know deer hunts are draw only so turkey hunts probably are also. They have deep ravines and lots of thickets so turkey hunting is probably tough

Canemount is prettymuch the pride and joy of MDWF. Last I looked it was only open to state residents for draw, for everything, so read the fine print before putting down money.

Pass Ricky Anglin's place. Instead of turning right into the sawmill, keep going about 7 more miles. It's on your left.
Fun fact: I grew up with the kid who inherited it. He was always a straight weirdo. I mean, really odd. He's currently serving something like 37 consecutive 60 year sentences in the Florida State Penitentiary.
The judge called it the most sickening case of child pornography he had ever seen. Apparently, the guy was not watching it. Or distributing it. He was producing it. In a home studio or some shite.
Anyhow, the State of MS bought the land from him when he went away for life. And the money went to the victims. Or something like that.

I had a friend who used to take an aluminum boat across the river from St Joe and hunt all that when it was still private.
Later on we both wound up working the property via Knight and Hale. When the guide started showing us the lay of the land and where we needed to concentrate our efforts, my friend told him….it’s okay man, I know this place like the back of my hand.
The owner, RJF, always thought it was funny as hell that this guy had eluded them for years as a poacher and was now working there on the up and up.
And yes, the kid was more than a little odd.

If your camp is in that area just go to Sandy Creek or the Homochitto NF

Ha. That reminds me of a story someone told here about getting checked while fishing, the warden says "yall ainn't got no empty beer cans?" and the guy says "no sir, we been sinking them".

Maybe I don’t follow. How did he inherit it if his dad died years after MDWFP bought it?
Inter webs indicate 2055 release.

Surprised your camp is in that area and has no turkeys.
I’ve drawn a deer hunt and turkey hunt there. It’s a quality experience. I called up a turkey that my son killed down there.
Residents only.

Some of the land the dad owned was put in the son's name prior to his legal issues or dad passing away. The son was always a stranger bird.

So, Ray John doesnt own Canemount anymore?
His son John is in the clink for child pornography?
WTF? I used to know these people.

My cousin has owned the property for about 15 years now. In the beginning we did have turkeys, but he has cleared most of the pines, and thinned some of the older mature oaks. It is great habitat for deer, but a lot of growth is from the chest level to the ground. So the turkeys have moved on.

Ray John is dead.
John Ray is in the Pen for life.
The State of MS owns most of the land that he accumulated.

Best bet is a semi or guided hunt. I went yesterday to a National Forrest in Mississippi near Brookhaven and birds are “right” yet, they gobbled for cow calls and owls but rarely on turkey calls. (I wasn’t the caller but with a guy that has killed or called to kill over 100 birds in this forrest) Plus you can’t hunt Turkeys in Mississippi until the 29th if you are out of state hunter unless you got a draw permit.
