That shite you see off I-55 between Lake P and Maureps. It looks ducky.

Years back, yeah. I believe some of the first DuckMen videos were filmed outta Manchac. I've heard this year has actually been decent down there, due to Ida "cleaning" out the marsh areas, and the drought north of here.

The first Duckmen videos were in Maurepas Swamp, but it was all good in this area back in the day.

Gotcha. I think you're right about the first duck men videos being filmed around there. Drove over it earlier in the foggy rain and it looked like it should have mallards dropping in it.

till late 80s is was still good, then like much of that area rapid decline. Had some great hunts there in early mid 80s on a private chunk about 11 miles south of where original duck men vids were filmed.

made a hunt in exact same spot 7-8 years ago, did not see a duck.

That sucks. Sounds about like every other duck hunting place in the state.

Back in the 90's and very early 2000's that area and many like it in SELA were a duck haven.

Then one summer it got super dry and grass grew. When the rains came, the grassmat just took over and it's never been the same since

Used to be beautiful flooded timber but now it's trash floaton in dead or dying trees

My moms coworkers husband had pic axe used to get him off from hugging cypress stump in 83. But yes, leading up to it was epic.

Used to kill a lot of divers, teal and a few big ducks out there in the mid to late 90’s. It dropped off quick. Kinda like Sherburne.

You can always get a few rounds off at woodies and hoodies there, but that’ll be all. It’s the same song and dance in every cypress swamp along the gulf coast these days.

Nope. It's a matted up shitty hell hole in there. 30 years ago you could mash Ducks everywhere around lake maurepaus but no more.

As a kid in the late 70's and early 80's we had a good friend of my dads Dr. Jack Horn he would take us back there once or twice a year. You could only get to his place by airboat. He had a trapper that would take us back there and drop us off and come back every hour or two and pick up ducks for us so we could keep shooting.

As a 7-15 year old it was an absolute true adventure and to go from Venice to there it was such a spectacular change. Cypress trees everywhere Oaks dropping acorns and mallards dropping into the timber. Sounds of wings hitting limbs it was such an amazing experience.

My greatest memory was my dad and I back there had 8 mallards come in and we managed to drop all 8 with 6 shots. The smile on my dad's face is one that will be etched into my mind until the end of my days.

Today I couldn't even tell you where the hell we were back there but the hunting was every bit as good as the stories you hear and the duckmen viedos made in there.

Grew up hunting Venice and the marsh and all I ever hunted. The closest to flooded timber hunting was around camp canal and a few spots by the wagon wheel.
2001 or so met a buddy who brought me to hunt some timber in the basin and was amazed at how awesome and different it was.
We were sitting in a hole with 6ft of water on a bluebird day and had mallards dropping in at 8-9 am by flocks of 20 at a time to shoot them at 20yd with their wings cupped.
I work with a few guys that know the hole we were in and they claim it’s a has been spot and no birds hardly ever in it.

How did everything go to shite at the same pace and time? And by everything, the rivers in NELA were ruined by the Corpse of Engineers, I've no idea what ruined the Maurepas, etc.?? wtf? But it all went to hell about the same time.

It’s all Phil Robertson’s fault, or so I heard.

Salvinia and water hyacinth replaced the duckweed and other groceries

Salvania and lilies I meant
