i have heard that you can eat any saltwater fish raw but i'm not sure about redfish and speckled trout.
i have had grouper on the boat and it was freakin awesome.
also ate a couple of live crawfish on a dare when i was a kid. read an article the other day that said you can get lung parasites from them. so i don't recommend that.

I'd pass on it too. Seems like a different consistency

Too mushy. Redfish wasn't bad!

Doesn't fish used for sushi get dried on ice before consumption? I would think the consistency of really fresh fish would be nasty. Not to mention specks often have those sperm looking parasites in the meat

I've done tuna, wahoo, and mahi offshore fresh sushi off the line....but I don't think I'd try specks.

The acid from lime juice cooks the flesh. I would not consider that raw, and I'm pretty squeamish about raw stuff.
I too ate a live crawfish as a kid on a dare. It was small and I chewed it. It basically had no taste.

I believe "sashimi grade" fish has been flash frozen to kill off any bacteria.
People eat fish raw out of the water and are fine, but it's probably not 100% safe, just like many things.

offshore fish are safe to eat straight from the water. fact.
presuming you can cut and eat it without contaminating it with the bait knife and cutting board you are probably using.

Do you often state that things are fact that are not?

okay you got me on mackerel and bonito, i'll give you that (fortunately they are not the best tasting fish so most people don't eat them). but the others are safe. the article even says they have NEVER found a case of the parasites they are warning people about. the article is a lot of speculation.
the fact that people have eaten sushi from offshore fish for years (way before the flash-freeze laws were implemented) without having widespread instances of parasites means that yes, they are safe to eat. there are exceptions of course but nothing is perfect. you can get sick from eating moldy bread too. fact.

Never had any desire to eat raw fish and frankly, can't understand it but that's just me. My oldest daughter loves sushi.

I eat tuna straight out the water all the time but never had the urge to try it with specs.......and not all sushi is frozen.

off topic but I ate seasoned raw groundmeat as a kid and that was pure deliciousness!!! If i eat that then I would pretty much eat any fish raw. I do love sushi.
