I'm buying a truck within the next few weeks and need some good pros/cons re: F-150 5.0L vs. Tundra 4.6L. I've read every thread I can find on this topic and understand what I'm getting in terms of sticker price, reliability, etc.

A 28' pontoon boat would be the largest/heaviest thing I would tow. I think ATVs. jet skis, alum bateau, all would be lighter. Would a Tundra 4x4 4.6L be enough or do I need more power? I dont want to spend for the larger V8 in Tundra, would have to go down in quality to the Ford for my budget. But really want a Tundra for high-mileage reliability. Thank you in advance!

I'm not considering the V6 Ecoboost (unless it can pull a big party barge) Not trying to start something between all three fan bases

I'm not far from trading myself and have the ecoboost. Really hoping the F150 Powerstroke will be out before the end of the year and if it's not I'll be considering the Nissan with a 5.0 Cummins.

Not even a consideration with the EB 3.5, will pull it better than either of the trucks you mentioned.

Why not the Tundra with the 5.7?

gas mileage & trying to stay in budget of around 40K

...but I just started looking on dealer lots on saturday & today. Maybe I can find a 4x 5.7L Tundra with low-ish miles

Get the 5.7. I have a 2012 Crew Cab 2wd. Gas mileage is not that much different and the extra power is handy. You can get reasonable mileage if you stay under 70-75 and don't bury your foot on take offs. I have gotten over 19 on road with mine. Towing will kill it tho, but true for most trucks. Not sure how much the price difference is, but the 4.6 is a little weak for that truck.

Go to Texas & get a 5.7 Tundra CM.
Hell for a finders fee I'll find you a brand new 17 Tundra CM w/ 5.7 4x4 for under 40

Those specs vary depending on specs of each build. Look up the websites and specs of each one. Calculate the weight of the boat loaded with gas gear etc. Be sure to get the heaviest duty trailer towing option. That would be a lot more important than the engine. Also 2WD trucks are always rated higher in towing capacity than 4WD because of the extra weight if the from diff and transfer cases.

Also does the boat trailer have trailer brakes, surge or electric. Braking is more important than pulling I think.

I would buy the Tundra first if you can afford it. If not, the F150 with the 5.0 is a solid 2nd choice.

You don't pay sales tax twice, you pay sales tax where you live. There are dealership in Houston that will deal on price

It's not a great motor. It's ok. I would take the old 6.2 I had over any gas ford engine

Call Karen @ Toyota of Plano. Tell her to give you the Costco price on this truck. She will get your info, email you the Costco invoice. If you like the price, join Costco for $55 & save yourself a few thousand bucks. If you don't like the price, no harm in asking.
I bought one from her 3 months ago and couldn't be happier. Hell she still emails me to make sure I'm completely happy. This is a no hassle no haggle method to buying a vehicle. I will never buy another vehicle by going to spend all day at a dealership going back & forth over price & finance.
