After reading the Acidently discaharge thread Why do u have to take the safety off to free the bolt.. i love my a bolt but dam i have never got used to taking the safety off to unload it . Just seems very unsafe and I know of no other guns that u have to do that for. I’m sure there are some But dam that’s dangerous . Are the x bolts the same way?

I think its weird being able to load the chamber with a safety on....been shooting Abolt to long I guess. I agree it's weird but I'm used to it.

Same for Weatherby. Gun has to be on fire to open the bolt.

My Tikka is like that. Never bothered me. Just keep your finger of the trigger guard and follow gun safety rules. There is no reason to be worried.

ive had an a-bolt for a long time and never had a problem with taking the safety off to work the bolt. However, when I started having to take cousins little kids and nephews and what not it did make me a little nervous. I've since moved away to a 3 click model 70 for when I take the kids.

Side note, I hunt with a kimber now but it's the same safety difference as the a-bolt

It’s not unusual for a bolt gun to be like that. I prefer them to be that way so I don’t have to worry about the bolt hanging on something and popping open. Had my Mauser sling a round into the swamp like that one time.

A 3 postion safety is the safest but I prefer a 2 position, bolt locked with safety on. As much as it pains me to say it, the x-bolt has a fantastic idea with the button to release the bolt. I just don’t like the x bolt.

Love my A-bolt rifles. Just about the quietest safety you will find as well. No loud click and very little hand movement. The bolt also drops right out very easily for cleaning unlike my Remington. Plus the box magazine makes loading/unloading convenient. I have not found a rifle that has wowed me enough to retire my abolt

Here's the A-Bolt PDF:

Need to address the safety issue to the company.

I never had a problem with it and never have thought about it. Just keep your rifle pointed in a safe direction when loading, unloading, etc., as you're supposed to, and don't remove the bolt unless verifying it is empty, and, as always keeping it pointed in a safe direction (or if clearing a jam-again-keep it pointed in a safe direction).

And accidental discharges with people getting injured are 99% of the time failing to keep the gun pointed in a safe direction or verifying it is empty. Rules No. 1 and 2 of safe gun handling.

There isn’t a safety issue. That’s just how a bolts (and many other bolt rifles) work

I don't understand. I've never seen a bolt action where the bolt doesn't easily come out

There is a safety issue. You have to put the rifle in the fire position to get the bolt off

No, there's not a safety issue unless one fails to follow the proper gun handling rules. Many bolt actions have been designed so that when the safety is in the safe position, it locks the bolt closed. Many newer designs allow the bolt to be worked w/ the safety in the safe position. If the OP doesn't like the design of the A Bolt and feels unsafe using it, then he should remedy the situation by buying a bolt action he feels safer w/. Winchester M70 and Savage bolt actions (and I'm sure others, as well) have 3 position safeties.

I did a google search but didn't find reports of accidental discharges w/ the A Bolt related to the safety. Anyone who feels unsafe moving the safety to the off position in order to work the bolt should feel just as unsafe working the action on a striker type handgun; in that situation you're working the action w/o even having the benefit of an external safety lever; same effect as working a bolt w/ the safety off.

NRA Gun Safety
The fundamental NRA rules for safe gun handling are:
1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.

2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.

3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
Whenever you pick up a gun, immediately engage the safety device if possible, and, if the gun has a magazine, remove it before opening the action and looking into the chamber(s) which should be clear of ammunition. If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.

I switched from a Remington to the Tikka, great gun, but the bolt was hard to get use to. The positive is, you won't accidentally open the bolt as long as the gun is on safety. This came in handy during a Elk trip, where there was a lot of hiking involved.

no. xbolts have a button that allows the bolt to be lifted while on safe.
