I recently purchased a bow as I want to try to get into bow hunting. I went to the range off of Antioch today but the thought of practicing in my backyard is tempting so that I can get my form consistent, but I’m in a neighborhood with a decent size backyard(total lot is just under half an acre).

My concerns would be how lawful is it and obviously worried about an accidental release and arrow going over a fence.

I’m probably not going to do it but I’m curious how many people on this board practice in the backyard?

I practice in my backyard. No fence. Back up to a golf course. Of course I don’t shoot when someone is playing but otherwise game on.

Try to find one of those 4’x6’ foam blocks. Put it up against the fence and put your target in front of it.

Start off at 10 to 15 yards and work your way back

I practice in my yard, right at an acre. Fence at back of property. Built a 2x4 framed stand on wheels with a 3/4” thick 4’x6’ horse stall mat that hangs off it as my backstop. Enough room for my Glendel buck and small block target to sit in front of.

When I was in college I lived in a house trailer and when it was raining I would shoot inside the trailer from the back wall down the hallway. Almost 20 yds. My brothers bedroom opened into the hallway and he frowned on it. But I’m sure you will be fine in your yard.

I wonder what the legality in Baton Rouge would be? I’ve searched online but could really find anything besides call your local municipality.

I would also need to read through my hoa laws.

I shoot in my backyard. Archery is quiet and your neighbors might never even know. Get some good targets, and use common sense. Maybe a solid plywood sheet for added backstop protection if need be.

Not to act like an outlaw here, but why are you so worried about lawfulness? It’s essentially silent. And if you practice enough, theoretically you won’t miss your target. And if you do, take these backstop safety measures mentioned above.

Probably more worried if a nosey neighbor were to try and report me. I figure the worse would be a fine.

As long as your neighbors aren't aholes and you aren't flinging arrows down the street, nothing to worry about.

Years ago when I bow hunted quite a bit, & in a different subdivision, I would put a lean to up or a lock on a tree and make sure I was shooting down. A missed archery shot can really frick something-one up.

Had security forces called on my for shooting in my backyard on base. They said they couldn't tell me exactly why, but they were pretty sure I wasn't allowed to do that

When you draw, keep the bow pointed at or below the target. If you have an AD then it will either hit the target or the ground. Start with a light draw weight so you aren’t pointing it into the air just to get it drawn back.

Just get on the roof and shoot down at your targets. It will alleviate potentially shooting your neighbor while also forcing him to watch you and acknowledge who the real man on the street is.

I was living in the Westhaven subdivision in Baton Rouge 12 years ago and one of my roommates asked if he could shoot my bow. We would shoot against a 6 ft privacy fence. He released the arrow while he was drawing and it stuck in to the neighbors house. Be careful. Where I live now I shoot in the ole baw across the streets yard where it backs up to woods.

I shoot in my backyard. Typical 1 acre city backyard.

I have my target up against my shed though, so if something happens and I slip, my arrow is going to hit my shed most likely.

Been doing it for 10 years and no shots into my neighbors yard yet.

I layered some of that foam insulation board with carboard in between. I used about 3-4 layers for my kids as a back drop and their arrows wouldn't pierce the back side, you may want a few more layers though.

Live on 75'x140' lot in south Baton Rouge. Generally shoot from back to front since I have aluminum fence against lake and wood privacy fence towards front of house (27 yards fence to fence). Didn't want to miss and lose arrow in the lake. Haven't had an issue in 2 years. Neighbors on lake can see me shoot and never have cared. Daughter and I sometimes shoot of the roof towards the back since she has a low slope roof out of her 2nd story window.

There is no legal issue in Baton Rouge. Some liberal run municipalities treat bows similar to a gun, but not here.
