Because a 243 is a superior round.

No need for better glass IMO except to spend money. My Remington 7400 has the original scope my grandpa put on it in 1984. Does fine and it is a deer/hog killing machine. Why fix what ain't broke. Save that money and get him another gun.

I only looked through it for a little bit and it was pretty foggy. I thought it was okay. Our furthest shot where he's going to hunt is 100 yards or so.

I may take your advice and get a 10/22 to mess around with. He has a Marlin Glenfield Model 75 that he shoots right now.

A couple of reasons for the 243 over 7-08:

1. First and foremost, Santa backed himself into a corner and made the decision to get him a gun on Tuesday and the only Savage Axis Youth in inventory was the 243

2. The 243 is plenty caliber for him - longest shot we'll take is 100yds - and, that's maximum.

3. He'll be able to use this gun for at least two years before passing it down to the littlest of Dongs who should get another two/three years out of it. After that, my grandson (I have a 26 year old daughter - no pics, bitches) will have the luxury of using it. And on and on and on - generational.

4. In a few years, I'll have built in excuse to purchase another firearm.

5. It's gonna make him happy, period.

Smack, it does not have the accu-trigger and that concerned me, but the dealer and I discussed it and he informed me that for a 9 year old the current trigger should not be an issue. If it is, I can have him put an aftermarket trigger on the gun.

You need an aftermarket, you do an after market trigger. You can do a trigger job on it in 10 minutes with a flat head, a smaller flat head and some snipping pliers.

Check it out on youtube.

Will do, Chedballz. And, thanks for the heads up.

Nice choice. Savage is making some damn good rifles for how little they cost.

AMEN!!

LDD, I'm not normally a big fan of the 243 as a youth rifle. but you done good. Congratulations for buying your son a hunting rifle. Obviously you had well-thought plan; your reasons make much sense. Make sure he wears earl plugs AND muffs when he practices at the bench. Even though the 243 doesn't recoil much, if he has a prolonged session at the bench, it might still be a good idea to deaden the recoil some by placing a small sand bag between his shoulder and the buttpad. Yeah, he won't notice the recoil or blast in the field, but bad lessons learned at the bench will usually eventually show up in the field. Good job!

And Momma can use it for backup.

Littlest one fancies himself a bow hunter, and he's not going to settle on Big Bit's hand me down.

He'll learn soon enough that Santa's not real and then he'll do the math and know the source.
