Looking at buying a used ski boat (2004) and shopping around for insurance quotes. Boat price is $23000. I have Geico auto insurance and looked at a bundle with BoatUS but it came back $1300/year which seems really high to me. That’s with an agreed value coverage and $100k liability. Anyone have any recommendations on what coverages to look at or experience with insurers? I grew up on ski boats, but never owned one so this is new to me. Thanks guys.

Find you an independent agent and have them provide you with 3 or 4 quotes.

I've never had boat insurance, but my boat is only worth about $9000.
I've always had $5000 aluminum boats before that with no insurance.

Am I missing something here?

If you get a loan or use storage you probably will be required to have insurance.

Progressive. Agreed to value, I pay about $700/yr on a Pathfinder.

The 1,300 sounds a bit high but it depends.

Note where it’s kept. Anywhere on or near a tidal or windstorm area will likely cost more.

Try progressive

Liability coverage. And uninsured boater coverage since most people that buy used boats don’t have boat insurance unless they took out a loan.

Also depends on top speed. A $60k bass boat is going to cost more to insure than a $60k bay boat because that bay boat probably only goes 35-40 mph but that bass boat is built to run 70. Not as familiar with ski boat speeds

Agree, try Progressive. Also Safeco

True. Speed is an issue as well as size.

I use sea insure through sea tow. 45k agreed value, 900$ deductible, 300k in liability and 1 million in fuel spill liability. I think it’s a little over 700$ per year. Also get a discount on seatow membership for first year. 22’ bay boat with 200hp for reference

Progressive. Agreed value of 25k, 5k for equipment, plus medical coverage. 22/month. My home and vehicles are through them also though.

Progressive Insurance, been great for me to date, even with claims:

$35K agreed amount on CC boat value, comprehensive and liability, fishing equipment, electronics, etc.

$100K/person & $300K/accident, uninsured boater too about $750/yr

That same policy with progressive starting new is about $1400/year. I’m guessing rates are just high now like everything else. Still shopping around but I’m not really finding anything I trust for less than $1000/year

Progressive, after quoting them all was easily best for me.

Give Ski Safe a try. I have a policy similar to what you state and it was $450 with them.

SkiSafe has the best rates from what I can find. $500-$700/year, 100k liability, 1k deductible. I saw them recommended on some Mastercraft forums, and saw one negative post about a claim, so I was unsure myself. Thanks for recommending. This may be the route I go.

Don’t know how y’all have such low rates with Progressive
