There is no targeting of bluefin tuna in the GOM. One incidental trophy (73" or greater) bluefin is allowed per vessel per year.

Iirc there are some exemptions for the long liners, but not sure about recreational folks. Sad thing is I assume this was an incidental catch, and by the time the fish reached the boat it was nearly dead anyway.
I'm always amazed how they find a way to get a fish that size into the boat.

Is a fish that size worth eating?

The show on Discovery catches these beasts in the Atlantic. They are worth a small fortune. $15-$20 a lb at the dock. They get over 10k per fish sometimes. They take a core sample and a steak from the tail and see how much fat is in it. I dont think the size matters, it might actually be worth more because they ship the big ones overseas for high end sushi.

Depending on the condition of the flesh, that fish is worth tens of thousands of dollars as table fare...

Yeah, it seems that the bigger ones tend to have the higher fat/oil content that fetches the big bucks.

Could you sell that fish for profit or would that be against state game laws?

What I wouldn't give to have enough money to fish like that

Depends on which HMS permit you buy, they cost the same but have different rules.
This fish was not caught in Louisianan waters.

Good core sample, decent color and fat. I can give you $16/lb.

You should see what Japanese sushi restaurants will pay for a tuna. It's insane.
