Black Bears in Louisiana

A couple of weeks ago I saw black bear on the side of the road in Avoyelles Parish. It was day time. He was near a strip of trees which had houses on both sides (probably several hundred yards away). I think I saw it from behind and I thought maybe it was a big dog or some kind of statue that was all black. When we got closer, my wife asked if it was a horse. It was not big enough to be a horse, but I thought maybe it was a pony. When we got closer it turned an looked at us (in the truck), and we could cleary see it was a black bear. It ran into the woods when we passed by (I had slowed down because I didn't want to hit an animal if it ran in the road).
I had never seen a black bear in Louisiana. I only saw one once in Tennessee when I was a kid. Apparently, black bear sightings are not uncommon in Louisiana. I was somewhat suprirsed because I had never heard of sightings around where I lived.
Anyone have any experience with black bears in Louisiana?

I've seen them in Pointe Coupee Parish. Specifically, around Innis and Lettsworth.

Yes sir….i actually see several per year on Hwy 65 south of Tallulah.
I talked to a biologist up that way and he said from that area (near Tensas NWR). Across the state down through the Atchafalaya Basin. I actually have relatives south of Alexandria that have seen one there.

Man, I thought that thread was lost to posterity. That has been a long damn time ago. That was a time when bears were truly rare in Louisiana.

We had this picture at our camp a couple years ago. We've had multiple feeders broken by them in Norwood.

LDWF and feds have been re-introducing the black bears in WMA’s and federal refuges for years, from Tensas to the Atchafalaya basin. Population has been growing. Several sightings just in my neighborhood.

LSU used to track them behind my father's farm in St. Mary Parish. It was not uncommon to see multiple bears on the farm. They loved sugar cane.

Saw one this morning in St Mary Parish going to Burns Point. Also have one on two a year rummage through our trash at one of the carbon black plants where I work.

Spot I am hunting for the first time this year in between Monterey and Jonesville. Have so many bears on the cameras it’s not even an anomaly at this point.

I’ve seen as many as five bears in one afternoon sit on deer stand in Madison Parish.

Plenty bears in and around st mary parish. We used to see them a lot bow hunting around berwick. If one of our guys spread some corn, bears were on the way

All over in Tensas. We see them hunting regularly.
