yeah, the 5.9 from the late 90's into 2000's is a great engine. Just know you will never be able to sneak up on anyone. That motor is loud as frick

can a half ton pickup not handle the boat?

it definitely can, I just think, maybe incorrectly, that if I am getting into high mileage vehicles I would prefer the diesel
to answer someone elses question, we just got the boat, its my dads but i can use it whenever I want. I could borrow his truck, but he will probably be out of town or using it to pull his bass boat. pulling the boat is really just a luxury that I want to have, and really I just want a 4wd, 4 door truck.

Get a half ton. Cheaper up front and cheaper on fuel.
Posted on 9/8/16 at 9:21 am to Theboot32
any high mileage vehicle, there's a probability on maintenance expenses and diesels maintenance cost way more than gas plus gas mileage will be better for commuting driving. I'd go half ton all the way. You'll get a better vehicle with gas than diesel imo.

what about similar year Cummins? anything to look out for on those? are those as good as this 7.3?
With absolutely no personal experience with these I've always been told the motors are super reliable, it's the rest of the truck you have to worry about. I seem to recall something about the automatic trans in these being total junk.

Yes those transmissions would go out every 100k like clockwork.

the tacoma is a good idea, but with two car seats i think it will be a little cramped
I pack 3 car seats in the back of my 2003 F-150 extra cab. The 5.4 pulls campers and boats easily. The 4 door is convenient, but not neccessary.

my dad has had 2 dodges (2500 and 3500) and both transmissions went out. sold the 3500 last month and has a gmc 3500 HD now

Older diesel trucks can easily get 20+mpg when set up right. Every one of them can
Eta: Those Dodges also came with a 5-speed manual option. Gotta get a bench seat IIRC

The Lexus/Toyota Landcruiser thread yesterday is what got me thinking.
GX470 will have better gas milage (16-17ish) than it's LX470 bretheren. Tow capacity is 5k-6.5k depending on model year and hitch.
Posted on 9/8/16 at 10:56 am to Theboot32
Looks like they still offer them, but they now have less power than their automatic counterparts
Eta: Just remembered I used to drive a dually F350 with a 5 speed for work before Katrina. It was tached out at around 65mph (no joke), so that's not an option

do you have the money or will you be borrowing? You can buy a salvage titled vehicle with low miles for under that price range. I did it. Been driving the truck for over a year now with no problems.

How much does that bay boat and trailer weigh and does it have trailer brakes
I can find you a 4x4 for 5k that meets all of the above with under 120k on it.
Just saying.
For example, I would have no problem towing that boat with a Nissan Xterra 3 3, much less an Xterra 4.0. If you can find one that has already had the trans replaced after radiator failure, or has never had an issue and you do the new radiator, you're talking under 7k.
Available in a 6spd manual if you are so inclined.
I can probably find a picture of mine towing an f250 and a 8000lb enclosed trailer.

Good luck I hope you can find it, that's asking a lot. A diesel like that is going to require a good bit of maintenance most likely. If you don't need it to pull I personally would go gasser.
I would personally either cut out the use of the bay boat or increase your budget. If you can bump your budget up a little bit you'd have a lot more options on trucks closer to $100k miles.

Hey now, don't forget about the 4.9.

Not to be a dick but, the 24 ' bay boat should probably be the first thing to go.
Sorry
Sorry

I think I mentioned in here, the bay boat isn't mine, it's my dad's, but I can use it whenever I want.
Thank y'all for all the input. Hopefully I sell my car soon and can start seriously looking for a truck

My only thought that hasn't been mentioned. Driving 60 miles a day and trying to save money with a baby on the way. Does it make the most sense to buy an older model truck that's going to be a gas guzzler and drive that much?
Maybe consider keeping the car since you are only borrowing the boat occasionally?
Is 4wd a "must" have in this scenario?
